I've been thinking about my WIPs of late. I have a couple now and I don't like that I've got stories that have been exposed to the world that I never finished despite all the good intentions I started out with. I always promised myself I wouldn't do that and... I did it.

So, if you've got a WIP(s) do you have intentions of going back to it/them, do you know which ones are never going to see the light of day again? Are you in denial like me and keep saying to yourself that after X,Y,Z, you'll get back to it, you swear. Do you think of ongoing verses as WIPs? If you're a reader, do you see a chapter heading and back away slowly/quickly? Tell me about them, reassure me that I'm not alone... Or feel free to berate me about the ones I haven't finished, I'm pretty sure I deserve it.

I've finally, finally made a start on my SG-1 remix fic which *looks at watch* is horribly lax of me. I'm not sure why it took so long for me to work up to it. Mostly I think I have this kind of weird reaction to remixes of any kind where I get all keen and excited and then totally fail with the follow through.

I'm also a little worried about the way I'm remixing this time, taking a small element of the original story and kind of spinning outwards. I'm just hoping my remixee likes it or at least doesn't want to have me hung, drawn and quartered.

I keep writing these little stories in my brain while I'm driving or in the supermarket or lying in bed or whatever in other people's verses that I will never write because, you know, other people's verses when I should be actually writing my stuff. Ha... like, in [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster's Live Free or Die Hard 'verse I've got this whole scenario worked out where Matt accidentally runs into Jack's current partner in a Starbucks. *facepalms*

I've had an influx of new people of late *waves* and I promise to get my Master lists up to date because I'm very aware that's where most of them start out getting to know me.

I can't speak for your remixee obviously, but I ADORE it when people do that with fics. I would say with my fics, but so far (sadly) no one's done that with anything of mine they've remixed.

OMG WRITE IT!! Srsly. WRITE IT. I would glee like no one had ever gleed before.

I lie to myself about my WIPs. I do. And someday it MAY turn out to be true, which is why I continue to lie to myself about it? I never know when I'll just suddenly get THE INSPIRATION to suddenly go back to something I haven't looked at in years. So I lie. And hope it will become the truth. :D

Hahahaa! With your permission (cheerleading) I will certainly see if I can pry it out of the brain pan. Man I need a Matt icon... hee!

I lie to myself about my WIPs

Oh my god, yes, all the time! :) I'm still waiting for THE INSPIRATION alot of the time.

Okay, remember this (http://kellifer-fic.livejournal.com/223345.html#cutid1) is entirely your fault.

Ooh, lots-a questions.
As a writer, I really don't like leaving stuff unfinished (or, trust me, my current fic would have been abendoned months ago). I don't consider 'verses as WIPs, but I guess it sort of depends on the verse.
As a reader, I really hate it when I get hooked on a story that just stops cuz the writer got tired of it. There are a few WIPs I follow, and know they're not gonna be updated, and that's just a shame.
However, there are a few plot bunnies I keep promising to write; backstories and different POVs I've been asked to write and promised I would, but I'm pretty sure I'm in denial about. Like Seven Days - which I keep promising to write from John and Sam's povs, but I'm pretty sure I never will.
About writing in other people's 'verses- You know what I'd do? I'd write it anyway, and then try tweaking it so it won't have to be in their 'verse, but a standalone or whatnot. Or you can ask their permission to post in their 'verse. Or refer to it in your story (though I'd still ask permission for that).
Hope this helps.

Speaking for myself, I have several WIP's, several of which are in dire need of an update. I won't abandon a fic, no matter what. My very first fic kinda petered out on me, partially because I got caught up in a new fandom (*couch*Supernatural*cough*) that ate my brain and took over my muse. I finally came up with an ending that gave me a way into the sequel that had sprouted about halfway through the original and that also didn't consist of: Rocks fall, everyone dies.

I generally work on whatever is inspiring me at the moment. but I periodically open one of the older WIP's and read through to see if I have anything new to contribute.

I keep writing these little stories in my brain while I'm driving or in the supermarket or lying in bed or whatever

I actually come up with some of my best plot twists while driving.

I keep telling myself that I haven't actually abandoned anything. Maybe I need a finish-fest - I think something similar was run a little while ago and I... didn't finish it... ha!

I actually come up with some of my best plot twists while driving.

I read once that Stephen King will write stories while lying in bed at night, basically going back to the beginning and spinning out a little more each night, tweaking and editing as he goes in his brain.

I have like, um probably over ten WIPs and I plan on finishing every one of them. One day.

I actually did finish one of my 'big three' as I called three stories I'd been working on that were all past ten pages and I'd invested time and thought into them. Finishing one encouraged me that i'd eventually finish the other two and then i'd probably have another 'big three' take their place.

I do kinda back away when i see chapter 4/25 or something. If the summary sounds good i'll keep my eye on the coming chapters and then read it when it's all posted. If I've read the author before and trust that they will finish the fic or want leave give it too big of a cliffhanger then i'll go ahead and read chapter 4.

See, if it's an x/x situation, I'm far more likely to read than if it's x/?. Because that tells me the author knows how much there is left to write, which tells me the whole story is planned out, so there's a very good chance of it actually getting written, as opposed to a situation where the author's just blindly heading off into the dark.

Oh my god yes, how many scary-ass never-ending stories are out there at the moment! I just look at something and wonder, how can you get to a point where you are Chapter 32/?... ??

Yes, that mystical ONE DAY... I have a lot of those... :D

Yep - definitely. Usually if the first time I see it it's already halfway through I kinda think... meh, too hard. :)

I once had a WIP. Well, it was actually two WIPs, because it had a sequel. I grew to hate it over the time I was writing it, but continued because I felt obligated. I finally slapped a really abrupt, bad ending on it just to get it over with. It was my first long fanfic, and I vowed to never, ever do it again.

I do have a story right now that's almost a WIP; both chapters are pretty self-contained--they're part of an overall plot, but it's not like you'll be horribly deprived if the next chapter never comes.

My [livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix has kind of expanded from what I first planned. I chose to remix a 900-word piece of Sam/Jack near-fluff from Sam's POV (it's not quite fluff--there's a little bit of exploration of Sam's character and her romantic history, albeit not much). Figured, okay, do a nice character vignette for Sam, maybe 2-3k words, tops, no problem. It has since eaten my brain. It's now over seven thousand words with at least another two thousand to go in the first draft, and it hasn't seen a beta yet, and it's due end of the month. And I don't write anywhere near as fast as you do. And I'm kind of nervous about the beta because I'm not sure how well the sections hold together. Basically, it's a series of about twelve events in Sam's life, from age four through the end of season 9, that made her into the woman she is today. At least I've got a decent title for it--I usually suck at titles.

I don't post unless I've finished the story, because I consider it unfair to readers. That said, I never did finish that Torchwood 'verse... :) so no, I guess I don't consider 'verses WIPs.

But your stuff's so good, I'd read it no matter if it stopped in the middle of a word...

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

N'awww... thankyou! :)

I don't actually post unless I've finished but the three(?) stories I haven't finished posting kind of met their maker in beta-land and need to be redone... I think that's why it's harder to get back to them...

I'm in denial. I have a ton of WIPs on my hard drive that i swear I'll finish but truthfully, I doubt it will happen. For some, the passion is gone. For others, I just don't have the time. Maybe I'll get back to them. But maybe that is the denial talking...

I *want* to finish stuff before i post, but sometimes i'm so excited by the story that i just want to post naaaaaaaaaow!!. But i've never abandoned a fic. Well, thee is *one* fic that needs finishing but i just can't think *where* to go with it, and it's languished for quite a while.

I feel bad about it, but it'll be done eventually. I would feel like a jerk if i put out six or eight or whatever chapters of a story and then just....dropped it. That seems so unfair to the people who so graciously and maybe even eagerly read it and commented. Just my opinion, but i *do* think i have a bit of a responsibility to finishing stuff i put out there for public perusal. Of course, that's just *me*, and not to be taken as a rule or anything.

Of course, i wrote an S/X fic that ended and a lot of people were all 'omg, more!! it's not done!!' and i basically was like 'yes, it is. it's done. sorry i didn't spin out every last bit of cracktastica you wanted, but...it's done.' So...i dunno. Sometimes a story just won't go forward and you have to just let it lie. If it's never picked back up again it's too bad, but it *happens*.

Um. There. Enough babble for ya?

Hee, yes! My failing is that I post the beginning when the rest is still being beta'd and sometimes my stories really need to be torn down and redone and I just... it's hard to face.

Hehe.
I usually post with about half the story done, and then i'm writing like a fiend so i can actually finish in a reasonable time. My beta-person does a good job but as a rule what i give them is pretty finished rather than something in need of a lot of editing.

You are indeed. I think reading your fics in chunks is actually what I enjoy most... not because they are hard going but because you pack so much into them that I need a little time to absorb each bit... :D

You're so not alone. I've read *countless* WIPs that never got finished. That's why I stopped reading WIPs from writers who aren't among my friends. Friends, I can trust. Random writers? Not so much anymore. It doesn't matter if the writer is good. I got burned too many times.

I had the strange urge to write a fic once (plot bunnies are the devillll!). It was back during the old Buffy days so a loooooooong time ago. Anyways, I kept writing and writing and writing and it became a monster fic, you know? those that keep growing but actually *never* get to the point? so I stopped because huh, I'm so not a writer. BUT I've never published any bits of it, even if friends urged me to do so, because, as a reader, I know how frustrating it is to start a fic and maybe never know how it ends. And thus ended my oh so brief career as a writer. ahahah.

Hope that helps.

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Hehehee... it does indeed! I'm with you on the only starting a WIP from someone I know and therefore trust to finish... but you could say that about me for 95% of the time... *hands*
