-> I'm going to be reccing more on my tumblr now because you just have to copy/paste the title and author off the A03 page and it does all the HTML stuff for you! Did I mention I am the LAZIEST person in the world?

-> I did a bunch of last minute fandom stockings and I think the reveal is... tomorrow? Not sure, I hadn't really investigated but just did some so peeps would not have empty stockings because that's just way too sad. :((( Some of the stuff is going to totally end up in fic though because I am shameless. ALSO LAZY - SEE ABOVE.

-> I'm watching a 'songs named after women' special on a cable music channel and while... good in theory and I always love me some Janey's Got A Gun... but ugh, SO MUCH TERRIBLE. I'm not sure what these programmers are thinking other than... not.

-> I need to write more. I HAVE DONE NOTHING, UGH.

-> Anyone got some bookrecs for me? I'm pretty eclectic in my reading - if you've read something lately that you loved, let me know. I'm starting to feel bad about basically only reading fanfic... I used to get through a book a week and now at a party on New Years someone asked me what the last book I read was and... I COULDN'T REMEMBER. I was horrified. I basically have turned into my sister who DOESN'T READ FOR PLEASURE AND I NEVER UNDERSTOOD THAT.

FWIW, if you click on the share button on an AO3 story it gives you the HTML you can paste into an LJ post or whatever.

Book Rec

The books of Raksura by Martha Wells is a really good trilogy. The first story is Cloud Roads. I'm not sure how much to tell you without giving the plot away....Moon is the main character. He can change between humanoid and a flying scaly form. He's spent his whole life hiding his scaly flying form because all the different groundling humanoids mistake it for that worlds most deadly species. He's been on his own since he was only a few years old. The first book deals with his experience of being reunited with a clan of his species and how he deals with culture clashes etc.

Yay for fic recs! I will totally reblog awesome recs - yesterday I found one I hadn't seen recced anywhere else at randomficrecs on Tumblr and it was fantastic. It's Clint/Coulson where Phil is the one suffering the after the events in the movie: The Whole World Is Moving (And I'm Standing Still)
by theladyingrey42.

I feel your pain on the reading front. It seems like there's a crazy glut of lovely fanfic to read, what with all the holiday exchanges and everyone posting because they have some free time - I have all the things bookmarked for later! For actual books I've mostly been going through Tanya Huff's backlist on my Nook, but that's basically like fanfic anyway...

If you check [livejournal.com profile] rivkat's journal, she does a lot of in-depth book reviews, both fiction and non-fiction, so that might be something to go by - I'm reminded because I think she also had positive things to say about the Martha Wells books. As a bookseller, I'd say maybe check out one of the 'Best American ____ of 2012' series - the yearly short-story, essay, and non-required reading anthologies make a super easy way to find new authors/reads without a huge time commitment. And telling people you're reading an anthology is way better than " uh .... " *tries to think back to last book read* (of course, my copy is still in the queue behind all the avengers_fest fics, so :P)

oh pooh

You ARE reading for pleasure. Just not books.

Know exactly what you mean, though. Been reading TONS of fan fic and very few books. I just picked up a Rob Thurman favorite of mine yesterday, though. Am re-reading it. Figure that'll help jumpstart me to a new book!

Re: oh pooh

Very true!

I think LOTR was the first book my sister finished as an adult. I made her read it. :D

Good choice on your part. Too bad she didn't continue reading!

I read parts 1 & 2 of The Mongoliad this year (part 3 isn't out yet), and I have really enjoyed it. It's co-authored by like half a dozen people (including Neal Stephenson who is the only one I'd heard of before reading it). It's kind of a historical AU where these knights go on a quest to kill the Khan so the Mongols will have to retreat from Europe to appoint a new leader. Meanwhile, in Mongolia, a soldier has been tasked with keeping the Khan alive. There's lots of intrigue, sword fights, and just a tiny dash of romance, so I was very happy with it, indeed.

The last of the Wheel of Time series is coming out this week if you have the dedication to make it through all of them.

I also really like Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files series.

I recently read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, which, while not my favorite book, was still really good.

The Song of Achilles (I forget the author) was also good.

I am right there with you re: books. I have been re-reading old favorites voraciously, but i swear, every time i try to find something new, i read summaries or whatever and go 'ew'. Maybe they're just poorly written or maybe i'm picky but so *little* of recent sci-fi/fantasy appeals to me.

The last thing i read that was 'new' that i really liked was called 'The Wind Up Girl', very dystopian-future thing set in, if i remember corectly, Thailand. Creeped me out a bit, but I enjoyed it very much.

I just...i dunno. There's very little m/m stuff in 'pro' writing, most of it stuff i have no interest in (like romance stories) and pretty much *none* in sci-fi or cyberpunk. I read fanfic to escape the heteronormative world, and it seems like pro writing *still* isn't really catching up. Meh.

I can recommend any and all Tanith Lee and C J Cherryh, and if you like mysteries, Dick Francis. Also all William Gibson. Feel free to ask for specifics if you're interested. Lee and Cherryh write both fantasy and sci-fi and Lee writes some stuff that's under the 'horror' genre, though it's not particularly, in my mind.

YW. :) Lee and Cherryh, in particular, have *huge* bibliographies.

My favorites lately have been:

The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch
1. Rivers of London (retitled Midnight Riot in the U.S.)
2. Moon Over Soho
3. Whispers Under Ground

and

The President's Vampire series by Christopher Farnsworth
1. Blood Oath
2. The President's Vampire
3. Red, White, and Blood

The Rivers of London series is basically a British urban fantasy done as a police procedural. The police put on their disposable jumpsuits and collect evidence, question suspects, and write up reports, but the crimes are all magical, so there's also spellcasting and supernatural beings as both enemies and allies. There's also a fair amount of humor and some serious whumping (one officer who was injured in the first book still hasn't recovered in the third book).

The President's Vampire series is about Nathaniel Cade, who was bound by a blood oath to the office of the President of the United States when he was a newly-turned vampire in the 1860s. His job is to protect the U.S. from all supernatural enemies, both foreign and domestic, with the help of his current human liaison Zach Barrows. Cade doesn't sparkle. Cade is a monster, but he's not particularly angsty about it. People tend to wet their pants when he makes eye contact with them. There's nothing he enjoys more than battling a supernatural creature that's stronger and faster than he is and that he doesn't know how to kill, because then he doesn't have to hold himself back. The series is funny and scary and has great action scenes. If you want a sample of what the President's Vampire series is like, Christopher Farnsworth posted a deleted flashback scene (http://chrisfarnsworth.com/extras-deleted-scene/) on his website where Cade takes on the Benders (yes, the same Benders as from Supernatural, who were based on a real family).
