kellifer: (someday you will estimate me)

Livejournal, I'm seriously trying to hang on, I don't want to quit you, but you keep freaking out and also telling me that unknown users are accessing my account when IT'S ALWAYS ME.

So, I made a tumblr. Or, well, I HALF-ASSED a tumblr before I realized that it might make me cry to keep trying to use it and then that site went down too. I'm kellifer-k on there but it's just an expanse of nothing that I haven't fixed yet because of aforementioned site down-age. However, I am going to try and figure this thing out so if you're on there, let me know because buggered if I can find out how to find people any other way other than asking them. ([livejournal.com profile] johanirae is the only person I have found and is therefore the only person I'm following at the moment).

It kind of scares me, so I'd also appreciate any noob tips. How do you get pictures/your profile/anything on the sidebars, is that all pages stuff? Ugh, I don't know, I love how this is advertised as a simple blog platform and my brain is all OH MY GOD NO, WHAT IS THIS FRESH HELL? Googling 'how do I use tumblr' isn't as helpful as you might think.

ETA: H-okay - I think I've figured this thing out, so for better or for worse, here i am on tumblr. My first act was to reblog something so I feel I'm getting into the spirit of the thing.

I'm gilajames over there. I use it mostly to look at pretty pictures. :-) I don't post much, but I do sometimes post a) pictures of quilts and b) snippet of fic that aren't ready for prime time.

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Neato! I'll snag you once I can scrape up enough emotional fortitude to give it another bash.

I'm assuming mine will be mostly pretty pictures and fic bits too. I'm going to try and rec more so it might be a good medium for that.

There's really not much to your Tumblr profile but a userpic. You can customize a bunch of things about how it displays or put an image as the wallpaper but I find that distracting myself.

Important tip #1: although "dashboard" sounds like the control panel, since it refers to the thing in the car where you see how everything is working, the Tumblr dashboard is your viewing page, rather like the lj friends page. That messed me up for a while.

Important tip #2: if you want to change stuff about how Tumblr looks, you can't do that from your actual page (the one with your username in it). You have to do that from settings button at the top of the Dashboard.

Finding people is a total crap shoot. The "tags" on Tumblr may help to some extent but the tags are curated by people from Tumblr, especially the popular ones, so stuff gets left out. The search function does not work well at all. Your best bet is to either know the person's user name or find someone who is sharing stuff you enjoy and track back to where they're getting it from and follow those people.

Tumblr has no idea what it wants to be when it grows up, IMNSHO.

:)

I got the dashboard thingie - I figured it was a friends-page type view and managed to find the button to switch off being bombarded with "popular" stuff, ugh.

I can't change the settings at the moment because I need the email they sent to my yahoo so it's a big blank untitled page. I don't get why NOTHING is restricted about your new tumblr except for changing how it looks by the set-up email. THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. I can post and follow and comment without the email but not change the look... wha??

Ugh, I figured out pretty quickly that the search function is completely crap. I searched for myself (I know, don't do it!) and a few recs came up, but then I searched for different titles of my stories (weird way of trying to find people but I couldn't think of anything else) and other stuff came up on each one of those that had my name in it too but didn't come up in the name search.

I just thought it would be kind of useful to rec and post fic bits and look at shiny things - but I've decided this is a trial run only - if it makes my soul cry I'm deleting it... hee!

Tumblr has a DEFINITE learning curve and a society with its own rules which is close to LJ fandom rules, but just different enough that you kind of go "bzuh?" sometimes. I was a n00b not too long ago, so I might be able to help. :)

I'm shinykari over there (because some hipster kid took my username and I'm still bitter four months later yes I am).

Yeah, pages are like... well, an extra random page, so you could (conceivably) post a list of your fandoms, an 'about me' page, that sort of thing. I had a couple, but I got annoyed with them and then found a layout that didn't allow for extra links, so I tossed most of them. :P

Noice!

I'll "follow" you (look at me with the LINGO) when I can work up to it. :D

From: [identity profile] norahy.livejournal.com

it might make me cry to keep trying to use it

echo this sentiment so hard

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Ugh - I was thinking it might be fun but anything that frustrating may be too much of an investment!

I'm just sad when people make journal entries stating that they've been active on tumblr but not here... :(((

My advice is don't follow more than 20 people. Otherwise you'll never be able to keep up. It takes me 30 minutes to check my tumblr and some days much longer than that. So I sort of give up. Basically, there is no harm in not catching up on all posts. If it's good enough someone will reblog.

I'm Amalthia at tumblr.

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Neato!

Ugh, believe me, I'm planning to only follow people like you guys and maybe that journal with the artists who draw Dean and Castiel raising Stiles... heh!

I can't imagine being able to FIND more than 20 people.

From: [identity profile] destina.livejournal.com

I'm destinaf over there. I enjoy tumblr, but only for posting and looking at pretty pictures. In fact, I don't follow people who make text posts, with rare exceptions, because I think words just screw up tumblr. *g* I don't mess with adding links on sidebars or anything else, so I can't be of any help to you on that.

I highly recommend the Tumblr Savior extension for firefox - all you have to do is type in words which are attached to images you don't want to see - for instance, in my case, Cumberbatch, Avengers, Thor, etc - and those posts are hidden from you. It's like a miracle, and it makes Tumblr manageable.)

This post might also be helpful to you (not mine, reblogged from another source):

Noice!

Will snag you when I can figure out how to get back in... hee!

I was planning to just use it for shinies, the occassional rec and fic bits.

From: [identity profile] destina.livejournal.com

I seriously have no idea how people do fanfic on tumblr. I don't ever read it there. I actually have that tag blocked on tumblr savior. Words! Unnecessary on tumblr! Except in tags. (You will get used to the whole 'venting your spleen in tags' thing - that's where people put their reactions, instead of attaching their reaction to reblogs in text. It's kind of awesome.)

Speaking of which: tag your posts, if you want people to love you. That's what enables them to block stuff they don't want, and track stuff they do want. Tagging is love.

See you over there! :D

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

I wouldn't post entire fic, yikes. I've tried reading a fic on there ONCE and it made my brain hurt. I would be more likely to post a teeny fic bit or recs. Oops, just made a post and didn't tag so will be doing that!

Is there an easy way to figure out what tags are available - I just tried to tag something and HAVE NO IDEA ugh.

There is a tag search, but because tags are freeform, there must be a billion of them. There isn't any kind of uniform tagging system. You make up your own. Fandoms do develop tags for pairings and whatnot, which you will eventually stumble onto. Some people do uniformly use spoiler tags to protect others, more or less, but Tumblr is a hugely spoileriffic environment without the same courtesy protection as LJ has had, so be forewarned about that; people post spoilers right and left. Other than that, tags are freeform. On one of my recent posts my tags were 'ugh kill me now', 'i really hope they are not fucking with us', 'merlin spoilers', etc. *g*

Woah yay darlinG!!! :D Following ya right back!

Oh I think the picture thing depends on what layout you use, some have it some don't. You can upload a userpic here:

http://www.tumblr.com/preferences (under the last subheader is an option to upload your user pic)

You can add some info about yourself when you customize your layout (also in the same subheader under theme, it would be under the INFO area)

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Hmmm... gone the simple route - just need to figure out tagging but I worked out how to add comments. :D

From: [identity profile] xcziel.livejournal.com

I'm xcziel on Tumblr too - I mostly just reblog Avengers/comics/Supernatural/Jeremy Renner/Jensen Ackles/fandom fun stuff - I'm pretty boring.

But if you want to find people, feel free to look through my follows - I've got a lot of LJ people on there! Comics people too. Plus, like, The HawkeyeInitiative, ThisIsJeremyFuckingRennerTalkin and Mansplained...

The best way to find people is just to go to the Tumblr of anyone you do know- or a general Stony or Renner or Teen Wolf or "fuckyeah...whatever" blog and follow the posts they've reblogged that you like back to the source. It can be easy to get carried away - I was just gonna follow [livejournal.com profile] scifigrl47 for her fic, now I've got like a hundred blogs on my dash. But it's so pretty, all the pretty ...

Ummmm... [livejournal.com profile] dauntdraws is daunt over there. I bet you'd enjoy flatbear's comics - ooh and rascalparadyne's C/C art is gorgeous. shawarmababy has an awesome Steve/Tony master rec list going. ordinaryink, laria-gwyn, queenklu, meh-guh, gyzym, devildoll, therealfoxxcub and radiophile are all over there too

Tumblr is more like Twitter than LJ - it's not really made for talking- people make announcements, give heads-ups, post pictures, etc. and let others respond by reblogging or liking the posts (you comment by using the "say" icon if it's turned on or simply reblogging with your added comments.) Some people like to do memes and informal polls through their asks (send someone an ask to talk to them - it works like a text or PM on LJ - they will reply to your ask box, or maybe post their reply linked to your ask on their blog, so others can join in the discussion!) Another thing to remember is that people like to mess around with their URLs a lot, so someone may be one thing Tuesday and something else on Wednesday (if you see weird names on your dash that you don't recognize, this may be why)

Welcome! I like your shoelaces.

P.S. a lot of the page decor stuff is from custom themes - some you have to pay for, some you can just nab from someone's blog you like the look of. Look for the "Install Theme" button on their URL (not your dash). The free themes you find with the "customize" button on your URL page (again, not your dash, this messed me up so bad at first) also have limited custom CSS, color options, etc. Beware super fancy themes that don't work well in mobile format, though!

THANK YOU! :D

Just need to figure out the tagging. I'm mostly going to use it for shiny stuff but maybe teeny fic snippets (so I stop writing them on random envelopes and scraps of paper) and recs.

From: [identity profile] xcziel.livejournal.com

Unfortunately (but often amusingly) the tagging is basically like the "free form" tags over at AO3 - its really just another place to put comments or for people to find things for themselves when they go back through their own posts.

There is no standardized tagging system. Just use the most generic search terms you can, like "Renner" - that will bring up anything with "renner" in it: "jeremy renner", "crazy renner", "renner gif", etc. Using the tags for a specific set of blog posts will usually work: "rennsday", scifigrl47's "Financial Friday", etc. but everything depends on what the blogger decided to use as tags - some are very conscientious and tag EVERYTHING, some just tag the URLs of people whose asks they are reposting (like twitter @s) To find the original blogger you have to look at the source, which sometimes can only be found on your "reblog" page. Otherwise, post authors are not tagged - meaning you can only search for people in the "Find Blogs" field.

Tag how you feel comfortable - your followers will know to check for personal tagging idiosyncracies and bear them in mind. Also - cool tags are very much a desirable thing. They go hand in hand with a lot of Tumblr, tag and URL ~humor~. {8D

What you said.

I just returned to lj a couple of weeks ago, cause I got tired of all the moving, beautiful pictures, missed discussions that had words and in them and made me think (I'm probably just not going to the right places in tumblr, I'd love recs). Never really figured out tumblr, so I can't be much help.

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

:D

I have a pretty short attention span so I'll probably forget to update very soon, like facebook.

I'm arliss there too, and I'm a'ready following you. I have several special interests (landscapes, skyscapes, horses, therapy dogs, forests, otters, mountains, etc.) "followed". My Tumblr started out as a respite from fandom, but we know how that usually goes. I geek over teacups and fountain pens, and okay, some sociopolitical stuff. I am random and eclectic, and I like not being fandom-focussed. My Tumblr is heavily weighted toward photography and art, and I use it far differently than LJ/DW, even though much of my flists duplicate (triplicate?). In any case, welcome!
