So, maybe I'm crap at this ficathon thing... heh... I should probably just go back to doing what y'all are here for...

Yes, I'm still getting the ficlets done. If I haven't done yours yet then that means you stumped me and left me scratching my head. But I'm getting there!!

Daniel was smiling as he got out of the shower but the expression fell off his face when he saw Janet sitting on the end of their bed, one boot on and one boot off, staring into space with a slight frown marring her features.

He belted his robe and hunched down in front of her, resting his hands on her knees. His touch brought Janet out of her reverie and her eyes came to meet his, the frown lingering.

“I died,” Janet sighed and it was Daniel’s turn to frown.

“Now, you know that if you go and do something like that you’ve actually got to tell me, right?” he asked, trying for jovial which fell flat.

“No, I mean there… in that place. I died and Cassie…she…didn’t.”

Daniel reached forward, circling Janet’s tiny waist in his arms and pulling her from the bed and into his lap. He held her against his chest, offering the only comfort he knew how to. “Please don’t start thinking like that, it will drive you insane,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to her forehead and feeling her shudder against him.

“I picked her up that day. If I hadn’t, we wouldn’t have had that accident and she would still…” Janet’s voice broke and unconsciously, Daniel ran his thumb over the tiny raised scar just below Janet’s hairline, the only lingering reminder of that long ago day.

That horrible day.

“You don’t know that. A lot of the stuff that happened in that other place didn’t happen here, and vice versa. You can’t regret living. I won’t let you.”

“If I could trade-“

“You can’t. Hindsight is a bitch. Maybe you wouldn’t have picked her up but then maybe she would’ve gotten a ride home with a friend and still been hit at that very same intersection. That day… I could’ve lost you both.” It was Daniel’s turn to shudder and Janet clutched him tightly.

“I had a talk to the other Daniel. He saw it. He had to watch you die. I just… I don’t think I could’ve… Jesus Janet, don’t say you wished that had happened because no matter what, I don’t.”

Janet turned in Daniel’s embrace, bringing her arms up and around his neck. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking about… I’m just so sorry about the whole goddamn thing. I just wish I didn’t know.”

“I kinda like it,” Daniel shrugged, his gesture causing Janet to lift up and down gently.

“What?” Janet blinked.

“Knowing there’s a place where she’s alive and happy and loved… I like that.”

“You can see the good in everything, can’t you? That amazing brain,” Janet sighed, running fingers gently over Daniel’s temple and down along his jaw.

“Some people would call it having blinders on,” Daniel grumbled, rolling his eyes.

Janet chuckled, cupping her hands on either side of Daniel’s face so all he could see was her.

“I like your blinders.”

“You know what? Me too.”
