Fic 'Effortless'

Pairing: None-ish (friendship... perhaps pre-het) Sam/Daniel
Rating: Mild
Notes: Sam and Daniel visiting (or on their way to) Atlantis. And this is completely optional, but I'd love a sort of intimate moment between Sam and Daniel. It could be either pre-het (Is that a word?) or just friendship.

Notes2: I may be expanding on this story... but this little moment came easily... *smiles*

~*~

She hadn’t seen that light in Daniel’s face for a long time and seeing it now, Samantha Carter realized she’d missed it.

Jack had a tendency to treat Daniel like a wayward child, but Sam now knew that it was mostly because his face would reflect excitement at discovery unlike any adult should be able to.

Unlike anyone who’d been traumatized as much as he had.

Daniel stood on the balcony of Atlantis, overlooking the ocean and the city sprawling to the West and there was such a simple joy on his face that it pained Sam to note that she’d been so used to the serious and damaged Daniel, she’d almost forgotten what this looked like.

She felt a touch on her shoulder and turned, seeing Colonel Sheppard. His expression was tentative, almost like he felt as if he were intruding on something. “Colonel Carter?”

They had never been formally introduced and although Jack had pointed John Sheppard out to her, Sam remembered with a start that he wouldn’t necessarily recognize her on sight. She smiled and turned to him, feeling a sense of loss akin to having to turn away from a particularly beautiful sunrise.

“Colonel Sheppard. Good to finally meet you,” she said, holding out a hand. His hand had been halfway up to a salute, now dropped and clasped her own.

“Likewise.” Sheppard had an easy and graceful grin and Sam knew exactly why Jack had warmed to him immediately. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but we’re ready for you and Doctor Jackson.”

Sam looked over her shoulder back at Daniel and then at Sheppard. “Just… we’ll be a minute, okay?”

Sheppard followed her gaze as it tracked back to Daniel and he nodded. “Sure, you betcha.” He turned and was gone and they were alone on the balcony again.

Sam stepped up to the railing and without looking at her, Daniel linked an arm through her own, drawing her closer. “I’ve waited… this is…” On one of the rare occasions in his life, Daniel seemed to be speechless.

“I know,” she agreed easily.

Daniel turned to her, his arm still through hers so the movement pressed them closer together. “I know you did this. I can’t… I’m not sure how to thank you. Jack would never have-“

“He would have eventually,” Sam corrected, smiling as she reached forward and rubbed a thumb on Daniel’s cheek. He’d managed to get an ink smudge from God only knew where. Dry skin wasn’t doing the trick so Sam licked her thumb and then stroked it along his cheekbone again.

On its retreat, Daniel captured her hand and held it against his chest. She could feel the urgent thumping of his heart, almost like it was a bird battering a cage.

She didn’t know how to explain that this was enough.
