Who wants: Doesn't have to have whumping, but I'd like good ol' Doc Fraiser in the story (2) I'd like the problem resolution to be other than usual (for example,
not Jack solving with gun but with brain or Daniel being the one to
want to blow something up or anything like that totally out of the
ordinary), though in character otherwise, and (3) one of SG-1 US
protagonists (Kinsey, Maybourne or the NID) to be behind the problem.

Thanks for the quick and dirty beta SuperFox!

Notes 2: This was written fast and beta'd fast so if you see any glaring mistakes, call them out!

“Huh.”

“Have you found something?”

“No, just… this is a really well built cell.”

“Oh, fabulous. Really helpful, Sir.”

Jack had been slowly making his way around the tiny cell both he and Sam were currently sequestered in, looking for a weakness or some other way to perhaps free themselves. Sam had looked at him with hope and excitement when he had reached to topmost corner of the cell.

She wondered if he was bored and had just gotten her hopes up to irk her.

Then again, they were in a pretty bad situation and even Jack would have to realise that it would be in poor taste to mess with her.

After their search turned up nothing, they returned to their previous position, both on opposite ends of the small cell with their legs stretched out and feet touching. They knew they were being watched so would use their touching boots to tap out a conversation in Morse code. It was slow and laborious but gave them something to do.

Sam started.

So, Goa’uld?

No, one of them would have come down to lord our capture over us by now

True. Human then?

Unfortunately, yes.

So that would mean…?

Either Kinsey or NID. I’m worried they’re keeping Daniel and Teal’c separate.

Sam frowned, her own concern about that very thing evident on her features.

It had been pretty brazen; Sam had to give them that. They’d been having a quiet team dinner at Jack’s place, as quiet as a few dozen beers and a lot of cow would allow. She figured they’d been pretty easy to take what with Jack and Daniel having had a little too much to drink. She had the bad feeling that they’d been monitored for quite a while before a well-outfitted group of about twelve men came in because she and Teal’c had been the first to be incapacitated, like they knew who would be capable of giving them the most resistance.

Jack sighed and stretched his arms over his head, his shoulders cracking unpleasantly. So, the kidnapping was bad enough, but being kidnapped and having to suffer through a migraine was just adding insult to injury.

He felt sorry for Daniel who had drunk less but always ended up with a much worse day-after.

Sam had been tapping his foot and Jack realised he had just managed to miss pretty much everything she’d said. He didn’t want to make her repeat it because it had seemed to take her a while so instead he tapped,
Yeah, me too

Sam scowled at him and Jack knew his response had been the wrong one and he’d been busted not paying attention.

Jack slowly but methodically checked his pockets when he noticed Sam doing it, but they weren’t, unfortunately, wearing BDU’s where something of use could have been missed. He was in jeans and a faded grey t-shirt and, more embarrassingly, he’d been kidnapped while wearing mandles.

If they had to run anywhere he was going to have to go bare foot.

He looked to Sam who had been wearing a pretty skirt and low cut shirt. Her shoes were even more impractical than his because they were strappy heels. Sam had been going to meet Janet after dinner for drinks and –

“Janet!” Jack exclaimed.

Sam looked at him sharply and pressed a finger to her lips. Jack sighed and rolled his eyes and tapped Janet on her foot.

It was Sam’s turn to roll her eyes.

Jack shrugged and then continued.

You were meeting Janet after dinner. She’s going to raise the alarm as soon as you’re a no-show. I was worried we’d not be listed as missing for a good three days or so because of our leave but she’ll know something’s up

Sam’s eyes grew round and she nodded slowly.

Right then, a massive explosion rocked the complex they were in. Jack threw himself forward so he was bodily over Sam as they were pelted with debris from the roof above. A second explosion pitched them both sideways.

When the world stopped rocking, Jack looked up blearily and saw that the cell door was lying flat on the floor and they had free access to the hallway outside. He looked down to Sam who was pinned beneath him and touched her face. “Are you okay?” he asked.

“I will be as soon as you get off me,” she squeaked and Jack grimaced and rolled so that he was free of Sam. He felt hot, glassy pain in his chest and knew he had probably either broken or at least badly bruised a rib.

He had also been blown clean out of his mandles and had no idea where they were.

Barefoot it was.

“Let’s not squander this opportunity,” he said, standing slowly. The pain was sharp but not unbearable so he figured he was probably just bruised. He looked at Sam who had a gash on her forehead and was covered in dust from head to foot, but looked otherwise reasonably undamaged.

Sam was blinking owlishly. “Isn’t it us who usually blows stuff up?” There was a flash of white teeth from within a grimy face and Jack couldn’t help but smile back.

Jack had never been so happy to see someone go completely overboard as he did that day.

Janet Frasier had certainly been suspicious when Sam had not shown up for their drinks session and it looked like she had called in the marines, National Guard and Airforce. As he and Sam had hobbled out of the charred wreckage that had once been a non-descript warehouse in the centre of town, they’d been blinded both aurally and visually by circling helicopters, spotlights and men shouting.

He and Sam had merely sunk down onto the curb together, arms still around each other, and waited for someone to notice them amongst all the hubbub. A couple of concerned firemen found them moments later and Jack demanded to see Janet Frasier as soon as he had a blanket thrown about his shoulders. Both firemen knew exactly who he was talking about and that made Jack grin like a loon.

Sitting in the back of an ambulance, still by Sam’s side and both of them with oxygen masks over their faces, the diminutive Doctor appeared out of the floating soot and smoke like an avenging angel in chunky Mary-Janes. Her face registered relief as soon as she spotted the pair and she came bustling over.

“We’re going to take you back to the base,” she said as soon as she was within hearing distance.

Jack pulled his oxygen mask aside. “Where’s Daniel and Teal’c?” he asked.

Janet’s eyes cut aside and away and Jack felt cold fear grip his heart.

“Janet, where are they?” Sam croaked, her hand finding Jack’s leg and her fingers clamping down.

“They’ve already been taken to the SGC. Teal’c’s okay but Daniel was closer to the blast zone. I’m going there now.”

“What happened?” Jack demanded, sliding down from the back of the ambulance. His ribs protested miserably from the sudden movement but he ignored the pain.

“I called in the alarm as soon as Sam didn’t show. There was very clear evidence at your place of a struggle so they started searching using that as a point of origin. We’d narrowed down the search perimeter to this industrial complex but had no idea which building you’d be in,” Janet smiled wanly.

“We figured the one that blew up would be the right one.”

~*~

“They were building a what?” Jack was standing by Daniel’s bedside, his ribs freshly taped up and only wearing scrub bottoms and a scowl. General Hammond stood beside him, anger clear on his usually passive features.

“A naquadah-enhanced dirty bomb.” Hammond repeated, the implications of which horrified him.

“But Daniel’s-“

“Fine, Sir. He was hit mostly with the concussive blast but luckily for Daniel they’d developed the actual explosive device but hadn’t placed any radioactive material in it yet.” Janet said from behind them both.

“Hey,” a small voice issued from the bed they were standing over and all three turned their attention back to Daniel, who was blinking sleepily. He raised a hand to rub his eyes but Jack arrested it on its path. Daniel noticed he didn’t so much have a hand as a heavily bandaged mitten and let Jack manoeuvre his hand back onto his chest.

Teal’c, who had been resting on the bed opposite, rose immediately and came to the side. He smiled and touched Daniel’s forehead. “It is good to see you awake, Daniel Jackson,” he greeted and Daniel smiled tiredly.

“I guess it worked, huh?” Daniel sighed, moving further up in the bed. He winced and settled more comfortably.

What worked? Son, we’re not exactly sure what happened.” Hammond prompted.

Jack laid a gentle hand on Daniel’s shoulder, grinning at him. “What did you do Daniel?”

“I think they were NID,” Daniel began. Sam appeared at Jack’s elbow, her eyes bright and relief plain on her features. “Anyway, they were building some kind of mass-destruction weapon. They said the word fallout and that can never be good.” All present could sympathise with Daniel’s aversion to radioactive weapons of any kind.

He had died after all.

“Apparently they couldn’t get the naquadah ratio right in the delivery system and were going to use Sam to help. They basically showed me and Teal’c what they were doing and how unstable the weapons were in their current form and then just leftus in there, with the prototype. “

Jack raised his eyebrows. “They what

“They believed that neither DanielJackson nor I would do anything to endanger either our lives or the lives of you and Major Carter,” Teal’c supplied.

Daniel looked pained for a second. “They said they were going to kill Jack first just so Sam would know they were serious. Then they’d hold our lives over Sam’s head until she did what they wanted.”

Jack balled his fists but they relaxed when Sam touched his arm gently.

“They kept going on about how sensitive the weapon was and how it wasn’t very useful in it’s current form because you couldn’t transport it anywhere. I just… gave it a nudge,” Daniel shrugged.

“DanielJackson pushed the weapon onto the floor,” Teal’c corrected, a rare smile touching his face.

Sam’s mouth dropped open. “You should’ve died,” she breathed.

“Yeah, probably,” Daniel allowed. “It took a second for the bomb to go off, long enough for Teal’c and me to get behind a steel table.”

“Wait, there was a secondary explosion,” Sam said.

A look passed between Teal’c and Daniel. “There were more prototypes that were triggered by the explosion, that we weren’t aware of,” Teal’c admitted gravely.

“They spent so long crowing about how you guys wouldn’t be able to escape because they’d built a cell in a bunker underneath the building. We thought there was a chance you’d survive the explosion, no matter how large,” Daniel finished. There were dark smudges under his eyes and he looked exhausted.

“But you didn’t know that you would.” Jack said.

Another look passed between Teal’c and Daniel. Something had happened that day that would bond them more closely than anything that had happened before. Jack thought he could guess what it was.

They’d said goodbye to each other, not expecting to survive at all.

“You’d have done the same.” Daniel stated simply. His brows knitted for a second and then he grinned at Sam.

“Probably just with a little more… finesse.”
