Rock.

He always chooses rock…

That was what Jack had assured her, so when Sam went with paper and Daniel flicked out two fingers in his version of scissors, Sam knew exactly who to blame.

Always Jack.

The MALP had shown the presence of natives so Jack didn’t want to leave the gate completely and risk them getting cut off. He’d said that either Sam or Daniel could accompany Teal’c to the nearby ruins that were showing an energy reading.

One game of rock, paper, scissors later and Sam found herself parked on the bottom of the ‘gate ramp, with nothing to look at but an expansive field of grass and the stars above. She leaned back on her elbows and sighed.

Okay, so they were especially pretty stars, but still.

Colorado afforded them the rare gift of being able to see stars at night, something most people in larger cities never got to experience. On this planet the stars seemed closer and brighter and the presence of a couple of nearby planets made the vista interesting.

“It’s not so bad, being stuck back here with me is it?” Jack asked from beside her and Sam let her eyes slide sideways.

He’d been General Jack O’Neill for eight weeks but had missed going offworld. When Cameron had done something unfortunate to his right ankle, instead of scrubbing the cake mission SG-1 was scheduled for, Jack had gone along.

“No, not so bad,” she agreed.

“I don’t know about you, but I’m starving.” Jack was trying to stand but the eight beers he’d downed in the last couple of hours weren’t helping matters. He gripped Sam’s knee on his third attempt to get up and Sam squeaked and flailed.

Jack froze. “What was that?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Nothing.” Sam protested, scooting further away from Jack on the couch.

“Carter, are you…ticklish?”

“Absolutely not, Sir.” Sam snapped, her tone serious but her face flushing.

Jack reached fingers out towards Sam, fanning them and Sam squealed, rolling off the couch and landing on the floor with a thump. She grunted when she landed on something hard and pulled the cordless phone out from underneath her back.

“Sweet! Order pizza, will ya?”

“She looks so…” Daniel was searching for the right word and Jack knew just which one.

“Destroyed,” he supplied.

Daniel’s eyes swung to Jack.

“She’ll be alright. Carter’s tough.” Jack crossed his arms over his chest.

“What’s this?”

Sam had been helping hunting around for the key to Jack’s top desk draw, something they did every few weeks, without success so far, when she pulled a piece of paper free of one of his files. Jack canted his head and looked at her quizzically. “If I’d have to guess-“

“It looks like a resignation letter.” Sam blinked, heading off Jack’s usual dry response and making Jack automatically reach out toward her and try to snatch the paper back. Sam pulled it up and away while trying to still read it.

“It’s nothing.” Jack protested.

“It is a resignation letter!” Sam exclaimed.

Jack stopped trying to rescue to sheaf of paper and sat down on the edge of his desk. He scrubbed a hand wearily threw his hair. “Read the last line.”

Sam scanned the page and then her lip quirked up a little. “Oh,” she raised eyes to him. “When did you write this? It wasn’t when-“

“Yes.” Jack said simply.

“Two Carters.” Jack breathed.

Any other circumstance, he would be thinking… cool

It was three hours till he had to head to the airport to get his plane to Washington. He was completely packed and the house was now an empty shell, a reminder of a life he was leaving behind. Daniel was picking him up to take him but when there was a rap on the door, it was Carter’s blonde head that peered around it.

“Oh hey, what happened to Daniel?” he asked, throwing his leather jacket over the bags heaped in his doorway.

Sam looked confused for a moment, but then her face cleared. “No, nothing. He’s still coming to get you. I just thought I’d drop by and say goodbye.”

“Again?” Jack smirked when Sam scowled at him.

“It’s weird, you going.”

“What’s so weird?” Jack noticed that Sam hadn’t yet crossed the threshold into his house but knew that while inviting her in would be the polite thing to do, it would also be pointless because there was currently nothing in his house to sit on. Instead he joined her on the porch, lowering himself onto the steps and patting beside him until she dropped down as well. “You’re not going to be here either. Bigger and better things await, and all those exciting gizmos to play with in Area 51.”

“It’ll be weird you not being in charge of me.” Sam bumped his shoulder companionably.

“Hey,” Jack protested. “No matter where I am, I’ll always be the boss of you.”

Sam snorted. “You are so not the boss of me.”

“Am too.”

“Are not.”

“Carter!” he snapped with all the authority he could muster and he saw her automatically tense, before clenching her fists and drumming them on her knees.

“Dammit, don’t do that.”

“How about-“ Jack reached forward, capturing Sam’s face between his palms and planting a firm kiss on her mouth, intense but brief. “That?”

“That, I can deal with.” Sam’s smile was gentle and playful and it took all of the manly strength he could muster not to drag her back into the house, lack of furniture be damned.

“Are you going to tell anyone?” Jack asked, knowing it probably wasn’t the best time to broach the subject, him leaving pretty soon and all.

“Not yet. I’d like to keep this, just for us for a little while.” Sam’s hands pressed against her chest, as if hugging the idea of what was happening to herself like a precious thing.

“Daniel will know. He can read me like one of his books, damn him.” Jack offered but Sam smiled again.

“Of course he’ll know, but he won’t say anything until we actually tell him.”

“So, what are you going to say when someone inevitably asks you out?”

Sam grinned. “I’ll tell them I’m seeing someone… sort of.”

That was it. Jack tackled her and they were both wrestling and laughing when Daniel’s car pulled into the drive.
