I'm shamelessly stealing this from [livejournal.com profile] surrealis and by extension, [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic. This is a 'Fic Kinks" meme, not kinks as in the sexual kind but stuff that really works for you story wise. Like [livejournal.com profile] surrealis, I had some general kinks and then some fandom-specific kinks... It's the kinds of stories/writing I love and can't go past.

In General:-

1. Dialogue written the way people actually talk. I find in a lot of stories, there's this really great flow in the narrative and then the dialogue is so stilted and formal and unnatural that it just throws me out.

2. Alternative universes that have a really well-thought out world behind them. I want to be able to touch every part of that world and not find gaps. I want to be left wondering what is around the next corner or behind the next door and know that there is something there even if it's not explicitly mentioned.

3. Imagery that leaves me aching to see what the characters are seeing. I am from a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains and I love people who can capture the world around them like that.

4. Sex that is merely part of the story rather than the reason for the story. You can tell when someone has written a bunch of scenes but are impatient to get to the sex which was the main point of their story. I may be biased but I also prefer the allusion to it all rather than the gritty detail. The emotion behind it rather than the slap-slickness.

5. Really well-realised OCs. I don't mind OCs at all in a fic as long as they are part of the story. The mark of an amazing OC is when you get to the end of that story and you're wondering about what happened to them as much as your main heroes.

6. I'm going to steal one of [livejournal.com profile] surrealis's list and say the perfect ending line. Mostly because this is where I fall down in story writing. The number of times I've written something and I just feel like it... peters out and I'm disappointed with how it ended but I can't think of how else to end it. Or I'll go the cheat-y route and end on a quip because then it hides my weak-ass ending...

7. A tightly woven angsty plot with humor throughout. I like to smile occasionally through the pain and this is really hard to do.

8. Fic that begins in the middle of the action. I love being dropped right into the middle of a scene but the real skill in this is getting the exposition then layered through the rest of the story.

9. Apocafic. Just... yes.

10. Intelligent, quirky bad guys who have a genuinely relatable side to them. Just look at the Mayor from Buffy. Evil with an agenda but an actual compacity to care for something which made him flawed and accessible.

Supernatural:-

1. The boys being boys. Domesticity especially, or their special brand of it. I do like case files, but we never really get to see their downtime and I love that it's explored in fic.

2. Outside POVs. I can't get enough of these because it's so relatable. We're all seeing the boys from the outside so it's interesting to me when you hear other people's thoughts on the matter.

3. Future fic.

4. Stories dealing with fall-out. I feel sometimes on the show we're actually gipped of seeing real fall-out of the boys actions or their current situation.

5. The boys being friends as well as brothers, because they are. They genuinely like each other and even though they get on each other's nerves, it's because they're in each other's pockets 24/7. Dean's wish-verse was hard to see because I got the feeling that it was a case of Dean thinking well, if Sam actually had a choice he wouldn't be with me, he wouldn't even like me, and it's just not true. I genuinely believe in my own little world that Sam asked Dean to go with him to Stanford and the reason they didn't talk for so long was because Dean said no.

Stargate SG-1:-

1. Good, solid team-fic. Lots of snarking, lots of humor, lots of team-love. (No, not that kind!) Especially when they're captured/whumped/whatever.

2. Good, solid team-fic when they have downtime. Downtime is a big thing with me obviously. It's when characters relax in their own homes and let their guard down that you can really get to know them.

3. Any romanace not being at the cost of another character.

4. Stranded offworld. Mostly if they are all together.

5. Daniel not being the damsel in distress. Being a useful member of the team because he is.

Stargate Atlantis:-

1. Secondary characters. Why does this show have such awesome secondary characters? That end of inspiring wonderful fic.

2. Downtime. Yep, it's a theme.

3. Ronon being the big smooshy puppy he so obviously is.

4. Alternative universes.
