Summary:“I just…I haven’t… that is I’m noticing…” Daniel gestures helplessly at Sam, trying to extricate himself from her grasp.

He's not supposed to be seeing her this way. His gaze isn't supposed to linger. He's never had this problem before. Maybe something has shifted in the alignment of the universe. Maybe the slide was so gradual he missed the motion. For all of his awareness of human nature and societal development, Daniel Jackson has never been known for his self-awareness. His own mind is his ultimate mystery to decipher.

But he can't stop watching her. She is all professionalism and efficiency and her thoughts are a million miles from him, but her lashes draw shadows on her cheeks beneath the overhead lights, and the line of her shoulder captivates him like a painting on an ancient temple wall.

My friend.

He tries the word out in his mind, turning it over, hoping it will work like the proverbial cold shower.

She’s my friend.

Daniel wonders if Jack ever employed a similar mantra.

Jack.

He thinks maybe that’s the magic word to stop his straying thoughts but just then Sam leans over the table to steal his highlighter and her forearm rests across his for the briefest of moments and he is having trouble remembering his own name.

Christ.

Daniel smacks his forehead on the desk in front of him harder than he means to and is seeing stars for a few moments. A chuckle from the opposite edge of the table has him looking up, rubbing his head and scowling.

“We have enough enemies giving you concussion without you doing it to yourself,” Sam chides. She has a gadget they found completely disassembled and there are wires and bolts everywhere.

“Do you actually know what you’re doing?”

“Of course I do,” she says, but he sees that she’s not entirely sure. He’s about to make another snarky comment but thinks better of it.

“I think I’m broken,” he sighs instead.

“You didn’t hit your head that hard.” Now Daniel has questioned it, Sam has slowed down what she’s doing and is starting to look very uncertain. She’s even biting her lower lip.

He hates that he’s done that.

“No, I just think I was made… broken.”

“What on earth are you talking about?” Sam puts the gadget aside and regards him seriously, probably not sure whether to be exasperated or amused.

“I think I might have gotten some of… Jack. In here.” Daniel gestures at his temple.

“That’s a terrifying thought.” Sam has decided to go with amused and Daniel frowns.

“I’m serious. I think Harlan may have mixed some of our thoughts up.” Daniel pushes away from the table and crosses his arms defensively. “I think I should go see him.”

“Wait.” Sam is closer to the door so is able to snag Daniel’s arm as he tries to brush past. “Why do you think that?”

“I just…I haven’t… that is I’m noticing…” Daniel gestures helplessly at Sam, trying to extricate himself from her grasp.

“You.. oh!” Sam blushes to her roots and Daniel is fascinated, wondering just how Harlan had managed it since none of them have actual blood and heat under the skin, merely wires and a whitish fluid. Daniel looks down at his own arms and can see that he has broken out in gooseflesh.

That’s pretty amazing as well.

“Anyway, I hadn’t before-“

“We don’t have a before,” Sam reminds him softly.

“Oh, right. What I meant was-“

His rambling is stopped by Sam’s lips on his own and he is surprised again. She’s warm and soft and he wonders if it’s weird that they’re doing this and also that it’s pretty weird that he can think that it’s weird and –

“Daniel, stop thinking. I can feel it,” Sam scolds, twining fingers in the hair at the base of his neck.

“So we-“ He uses the opportunity of her breaking the kiss to start talking and she rolls her eyes.

“Are starting with a blank page.” She nods. “Those other… us, we’re different. I want to be a different person. I don’t want to imitate another person’s life. Too much of us is … imitation.”

“Is that the only reason you’re… you know, with me?”

Sam tightens her grip on Daniel’s hair and tugs gently. “Silly monkey,” she sighs. “Try looking in the mirror once in a while and then doubt my motives.”

Outside the door, Jack listens with a heavy heart or, he thinks wryly, whatever the hell it is beating a rhythm in his chest. They can start again but he’s having a little trouble letting go.

Of everything.

He makes a decision.

Tomorrow they’ll take the portable battery packs out for a test run. He needs to keep at least one thing of Jack O’Neill’s.

Going offworld will have to be it.

Robot SG-1 always make me feel sad. It's basically our SG-1 abandoned and left to fend for themselves and I find that rather depressing. Which is a long winded way of saying that I enjoyed your story very much but now I'm a little bit miserable, escpecially thinking of the way things turned out... However you did make a convincing excuse for a little Sam/Dan smoochiness,,,poor Jack...

I know... it is actually awful once you think about it... to them they are Sg-1 and they get abandoned on a world that's basically just a big warehouse... no wonder they wanted to go offworld... :)

Very wistful and poignant. Those doubles are such tragic fugures and you really captured that here.

Oh, yes, I remember this one! Lovely story. Leaves quite an ache. One prefers not to think about the Robot Doubles... I remember it being so gutwrenching on first viewing when you found out they weren't our SG-1, but you'd already been through so much with them, from their perspective (thinking they were their usual selves), that you were completely feeling for and with them, and you didn't want to let go of them; they seemed equally real.

Anyhow, lovely fic.

Ooh, lovely sadness.

But now Jack's broken.

Think robot!Sam could be, you know, not a one-man woman? (Very naughty thoughts, I know, but...poor Jack!)

Robot!SG-1. Love it. It would be interesting to explore this further. It would be fun to see the robot versions together in different pairings. I'm just being wishful today. It was good.

Oh, my. There is such a sadness to the whole robot!SG-1 team, it always gives me that tight feeling in my chest. This story is no exception. I think that it's a sign of great story telling, or at least great characters, that we care about even the "fake" versions of them. The writing team on the show did an awesome job and you story here takes it a bit further, which I love.

Thank you.
