“You’re an idiot!”
John opened his eyes slowly to see a glowering Rodney staring down at him. John moved a hand up towards his face and it was arrested and put firmly back at his side. “Hey Rodney,’ John managed, his other hand tracking towards his face and that was stopped to, so now Rodney was leaning over him with his arms pinned.
“An idiot!” Rodney repeated.
“I-“
“No, I get to talk now. You gave up talking privileges. We slogged for two days through marshland and you had a great big gash on your leg and you didn’t say a word about it!”
“I didn’t want to complain,” John tried for levity but Rodney’s glare deepened and John started to think that maybe he should call for a nurse because it looked for all the world like he was about to be smothered by a pillow.
“Carson said you must have had the fever for at least a day and still, you say nothing.”
“I said I-“
“You were cold John. When we got you back through the ‘gate you were cold and we thought… I thought…”
John turned his wrist in Rodney’s grip, awkwardly stroking the skin he could reach with a thumb.
“You’re not a superhero. Stop thinking you’re invincible.”
John smiled weakly. “That wouldn’t be the super power I’d ask for. You know what I would ask for.”
Rodney looked confused for a second, but then his face cleared and he thunked his head on the mattress by John’s side.
“Oh my god, you’re an idiot.”
Rodney would never admit just how glad he was that John was an alive idiot.
Okay, maybe someday.
