In the weird void between waking and sleeping, this little scene played itself out in my head.

Title: Sense
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
Characters: Jack/Daniel (gen or pre-ship, pick your poison)
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None.

Summary: Some would call it a sixth sense, but since Jack’s sense of smell was pretty much shot, hence why he usually burned steaks rather than just cooking them, he had come to think of it as good old number five.

He woke up with that greasy, clenching feeling that heralded something being wrong.

Some would call it a sixth sense, but since Jack’s sense of smell was pretty much shot, hence why he usually burned steaks rather than just cooking them, he had come to think of it as good old number five.

He couldn’t quantify it any better than that.

Something was just going to go wrong today.

Standing at the bottom of the gate ramp with the new and improved inserts, Jack couldn’t resist the temptation to slap Teal’c in the chest, feeling the slight give of the insert under his jacket. He had thought the Jaffa would be the one resistant to the armor but then hell, Jaffa were all about armor. He reached across and flicked Carter on the belly and there was the hollow thok sound that meant she was wearing it too.

Good soldier.

Which left Daniel, who’d been studying a journal in his hands and hadn’t been paying attention. Jack stepped around Carter and landed an open-palmed slap to Daniel’s chest, just over his heart. Daniel let out a “Hey!” of surprise when he dropped his book and stumbled a step backward but Jack advanced on him, the hit confirming his suspicion that all that was under Daniel’s BDUs was, well, Daniel.

Jack made a curt gesture and the dialing of the gate halted.

“Go put it on,” Jack snapped and Daniel blinked at him and coloured.

He opened his mouth to protest, looked to Sam and Teal’c who were watching the little exchange curiously and then closed his mouth with a snap.

He jogged from the gateroom without another word.

***

Jack held Daniel’s jacket in his hands. It was shredded and still smelled vaguely of smoke.

“It’s kinda creepy how you do that,” a voice issued from behind him and Jack turned to see Daniel appear around the infirmary curtain, holding a clean t-shirt in hand. He had a patchwork of bandaging up his arms and across his shoulders and there was livid bruising across his midsection. He pulled the t-shirt awkwardly over his head and when he hesitated with it halfway down, Jack reached forward and yanked on the hem, pulling it the rest of the way, a small hiss issuing from Daniel the only indication that he’d been struggling.

“I just… I don’t know,” Jack waved a non-committal hand and Daniel canted his head, studying him as if puzzling something out.

“When you get one of these feelings, I should just stay home, shouldn’t I?” he asked, wincing as he leaned over to retrieve his boots from the floor.

“You wouldn’t, even if I asked you too,” Jack said, shrugging.

Daniel sighed. “Probably not,” he agreed.

Wow.

Um.

Wow.

Jack voice = fantastic.

Love that he checked everybody, starting with those closest, and that it's Daniel who makes the leap that it's always him, because Daniel does like to assume things will go wrong, he's just fatalistic about it.

Wow.

That is what all gen fic should be. And pre-slash as well. *grins*

Hope you had a good Easter. *didn't* And, hey, the clincher? I have to celebrate Easter AGAIN. On this coming Saturday. With my dad's family. *blehs*

Oh that gave me shivers! Suppose he hadn't had the feeling, or hadn't checked, or Daniel had argued, or... ::meeps:;

I can just imagine what Jack must be thinking here, and that makes it pre-slash for me. :-)

V. nice!

Wwwwow. Awesome.

Minor fix: "You wouldn't, even if I asked you to,"

Just me fixing you. Sorry. (and since you're in a receptive mood...you can't "shrug" words, so it should probably be a period at the end of the quote and then a separate sentence.

this is *utterly* wonderful. marvelous team, delightful jack being *so* himself. and the detail of how he perceives the armor (and lack thereof) in each of them.

also...hilarious how jack counts his senses. *g*
