Five Birthdays Missed Working for the SGC

-Jack-

“Beer and pizza,” Jack grumps for probably the fiftieth time, waiting for someone to ask him what he’s actually griping about but no one is indulging him. Sam is making a careful circuit of the cell they’re in, looking for weaknesses. Teal’c is deep in Kel’no’Reem because he took a particularly nasty staff blast to the shoulder and Daniel is lying on his back, one arm thrown over his eyes.

Beer and Pizza,” he says pointedly again, wanting to know who will crack first. He has his money on Daniel and is surprised when it’s Teal’c who opens one eye, raising an eyebrow at him and huffs in annoyance.

“Is there something you wish to tell us O’Neill?” he asks in a tone that promises Jack that if Jack keeps annoying him, he’s liable to just simply twist his head off with his bare hands.

“Birthdays are supposed to be spent just sitting around on my couch, guzzling beer and eating pizza. Not, I repeat not in a Goa’uld cell waiting for the latest gaudily dressed bad guy to come down and tell us that he has finally defeated the Tau’ri.”

“I too find our current predicament troubling, O’Neill,” Teal’c allows. “But if it were a choice between this and watching your sport of ice and large sticks, I would choose this.”

Jack blinks when he hears Daniel snort and his eyes narrow. “Wise ass,” he growls.

-Sam-

She’d found the envelope on her lab table and had read the almost indecipherable scrawl across the front.

Do not open until midnight

She looked at the clock by her door and noted it was now a few minutes past. Sam tore the end off the envelope with her fingers and a piece of paper fluttered out onto the floor. She stooped to retrieve it and saw the same hand across the line sheet.

Come to the cafeteria

Sam sighed, looking at the mountain of work she still had to plough through before her team went offworld in another four hours and figured she needed a break.

Sam stopped short in the cafeteria entrance when she noticed it was empty, save for her three guys. They were crowded around one of the small tables and turned as one when they heard her clear her throat behind them.

Sam laughed when she noticed they were all wearing tiny children’s party hats, including Teal’c who had his pulled low over his forehead like a horn. He looked perplexed when Sam laughed and tapped the paper hat.

“O’Neill advised that this was ceremonial,” he said, his eyes sliding sideways, brows pulled down with the look he got when he thought he was missing a joke.

Sam’s giggles subsided when she noticed what was on the table when Daniel stepped aside. It was a huge mound of blue jello with whipped cream sprayed haphazardly on the top. There were candles stuck in it in the top and the sides and Sam’s eyes narrowed. The thing was fairly bristling with the brightly coloured candles.

“Just how old do you think I am?” Sam demanded and all three men dissolved into giggles.

“You’ve got three minutes before we all have to get back to work. Just eat your damn cake,” Jack said gruffly, with such affection in his tone that he was the one she hugged first.

-Daniel-

Jack had been in a foul mood all day and Sam had been trying to figure it out. It was only when she sequestered herself in her lab, having given up and deciding retreat was the better part of valor in this instance that she happened to glance at the calendar tacked up to her wall and saw in green pen a ‘D’ inscribed in the very top edge of the box for that day.

Oh.

Oh

Sam grabbed Teal’c, quickly explaining the problem and then cornered Jack in his office, advising that they were all off duty and were heading to O’Malley’s to get very drunk.

Jack grumbled the whole way up to the surface, across the parking lot and into his truck but she caught out of the corner of her eye such relief in his face when he thought he wasn’t being watched that she knew she’d done the right thing.

When they arrived at O’Malley’s both Teal’c and Jack claimed a hand of hers each as they walked toward the bar.

-Teal’c-

Jaffa did not usually celebrate their birthdays but he appreciated the gesture when Hammond advised that he was free to travel to Chulack to be with his family.

He had not idea how General Hammond even knew when his birthday was. He’d worked it out with O’Neill on an earth calendar once, having both Daniel and Sam advising on the difference between the Jaffa cycles and the Earth ones. It had ended up being a team project and although he wasn’t that fussed, he enjoyed the pleasure his teammates got from the simple exercise and so allowed them their little weirdness.

He realized they’d probably been planning this all along and was grateful and touched by the trouble they’d gone to.

As he stood on the bottom of the ramp the Stargate activated and word came down that another team was coming in hot. Teal’c looked up to the viewing window to see Hammond and the man was wearing a look of apology. Teal’c let a hand drift over his desert robes and then smiled.

“I shall get changed,” he offered and Hammond looked relieved. He knew the General would have had to tell him he couldn’t go until the other team was through and debriefed and he wanted to spare the man from giving him that order.

He hoped Hammond understood that the very idea was enough.

He hoped everyone understood that the very idea that he could travel back to his homeworld freely, visit his son who was married and see his countrymen out of bondage was worth it all. ‘

It was worth giving up every birthday he had ever had, or was going to.

-Cameron-

Yee-har!

Cameron was running down the hill, gun over his shoulder and with a large and very angry mob on his heels. Daniel, Sam and Teal’c took their cues from him and pelted towards the Stargate.

“What did you do?” Daniel demanded as he skidded to a halt in front of the DHD, slapping the symbols to Earth with the flat of his palm.

“I don’t exactly know,” Cameron puffed. “All I can tell you is they’re a little annoyed.”

“A little?” Sam yelled incredulously as she ducked an arrow that whizzed passed her ear.

An arrow. Sometimes she hated this job.

“Go, go, go!” Cameron yelled as the Event Horizon bloomed into life. He made sure all three of his teammates were through before he backed through the shimmering surface. He felt something solid and heavy connect with his thigh and fell backwards, tumbling down the ramp on the other side.

He was caught at the bottom of the ramp and hauled upright by a still heavily panting Daniel.

“You’re shot!” Daniel exclaimed and Cameron looked down to see an ugly looking arrow shaft sticking halfway out of his leg.

“Fancy that,” he sighed and then passed out.

Six hours later, when Cameron came to he was lying in an infirmary bed, leg strapped up and wheelie table pulled across his chest. There was a single cupcake sitting on the table with sickly green icing and a blue candle.

He looked over and saw that Teal’c and Sam were stretched out on the uncomfortable looking plastic infirmary chairs, legs tangled. Daniel was stretched out on the other bed, still in his grubby BDUs and snoring softly.

“You’re very lucky,” Doctor Lam admonished him from the end of his bed. “A little deeper and a little to the left and you could have bled out very quickly. I know they seem ridiculous these days but an arrow can kill you as effectively as a bullet.”

Cameron sighed and scrunched down in the bed. He tapped the cupcake thoughtfully and then looked around again, knowing that this team, his team was waiting for him.

“Doc,” he drawled sleepily. “You don’t have to worry. I plan on dying with as many birthdays as I can accumulate.”
