Summary: Jack and Teal’c shuffled in, both looking a little worse for wear and Teal’c clutching a crushed cowboy hat. Jack looked pissed in both senses of the word and Teal’c just looked confused.
Daniel opened the door and looked out, the chill of the night making his flesh prickle. He squinted, rubbing one eye and finally huffed in annoyance and stepped out of the threshold, allowing his two visitors entrance.
“This better be good,” he grumbled.
Jack and Teal’c shuffled in, both looking a little worse for wear and Teal’c clutching a crushed cowboy hat. Jack looked pissed in both senses of the word and Teal’c just looked confused.
As soon as they reached Daniel’s living room, Jack flopped onto the couch and Teal’c headed for the glass door on the balcony, sliding it open and slipping through. Daniel lowered himself onto his overstuffed armchair, clutching his robe tighter about himself and leaned forward to tap Jack on the knee.
“Well? I’m waiting for the brilliant reason as to why you’ve turned up on my doorstep at three in the morning.”
“We got ejected,” Jack grumbled.
Daniel just blinked. “As in out of a plane?”
Jack rolled his eyes. “Out of the club.”
“The… oh. You mean the club I should’ve been at to stop you getting yourselves into trouble?” Daniel asked mildly and Jack leaned forward, scrubbing hands through his hair.
“You were invited,” Jack pointed out. “You said no.”
“I always say no at first Jack. I thought we had a system.”
“What system?”
“You ask me to do something dubious, I object and am morally outraged at the suggestion, we go back and forth for a while and then you convince me.”
“That’s our system?”
“Yes, I thought you knew that. That way I can tell Sam the next day that you dragged me into the aforementioned dubious pursuit.”
Jack sighed, slumping further into the chair. “Be that as it may, you weren’t there and we got ejected, rather forcefully.”
“I can see that. What happened?” Daniel winced; tapping the skin next to his right eye, indicating his sympathy for Jack’s rapidly blackening one.
“Teal’c got in.”
“In what?”
“In the ring.”
“In the ring?”
“Yes, in the jello-wrestling ring. Teal’c said something about them dishonouring their families by fighting so poorly and with such insufficient armour and then before I knew it he was across the club and he was… in.”
Daniel turned to look at Teal’c, who was standing on the balcony facing the darkened city, looking regal and noble, and apparently having jumped into a jello wrestling pit only a few short hours earlier.
Daniel's brows drew down. "Then why are his clothes clean?" he asked and Jack huffed again.
"He didn't want to have an unfair advantage. Apparently."
“Do you ever get the feeling sometimes that he’s just messing with us?”
“All the time, Daniel. All the time.”

Summary: Despite all this, she had never really been able to figure out Teal’c.
Samantha Carter prided herself on being able to figure things out.
When she was twelve she had taken apart her Father’s Oldsmobile, just to put it back together again. He had been concerned but he had let her go because he had always said he couldn’t stand up to her ‘determined’ face.
Okay, so Daniel had swanned in and figured out how to reach Abydos using the Stargate, but she had allowed for stellar drift, making it possible to travel to hundreds of other worlds.
She was pretty sure she would crack the anti-gravity device they had locked up in Area 52 when she had a spare moment and she was well on her way to backwards engineering the baby stargate Orlin had created in her basement, although that was a side project… that no one really knew about.
Despite all this, she had never really been able to figure out Teal’c.
It was December twenty-five, a holiday for most people but just another day on the calendar for her. She was working in her lab on the piece of what looked like Ancient tech that SG-19 had dragged back through the ‘gate and Teal’c sat beside her, patiently holding a pair of pliers that looked like a toy in his broad hands and was putting up with her saying every now and again, “Okay, a bit higher… now a bit to the left… hold her steady…”
As they decided to break for lunch, she trailed him down the hallway, noting how people would skirt out of his way but smile at him while doing it and he would incline his head in greeting to each and every one.
As she set her tray down opposite Teal’c, pulling the blue jello towards her that was mercifully procured because the unfortunate kitchen staff that were stuck in the Mountain on Christmas knew she was there as well, she decided to ask.
“The General said you were going to spend the holiday with family,” she said, digging her spoon into the jello, breaking the perfectly flat surface at the top which was always her favourite part about eating it.
“I am,” Teal’c said simply, a small smile flitting across his face, almost too quick for her to catch.
Sam felt warmth flood through her and a smile wash over her own face.
She didn’t need to figure Teal’c out at all. Every now and again, he would give her a glimpse of the man he was.
That was enough.

Summary: He gets by with a single spoken word that covers all manner of sins.
The spoken word has never been his friend.
He has learned to convey more with a slight tilt of his head, a raised eyebrow and a tiny quirk of the mouth than most men did with a whole diatribe. It isn't that he is laconic by nature, but that words seemed to fail him, always coming out wrong.
Harsh and never what he means to say.
And yet…
There are those that can weave music of the spoken language. Daniel Jackson can make it appear easy and natural in any number of dialects. Samantha Carter has a strange yet compelling cadence to her explanations that is in its own way melodic.
Jack O’Neill cuts straight to the point and that in and of itself is a thing of beauty.
He gets by with a single spoken word that covers all manner of sins.
And yet…
His previous master liked his recalcitrance and thought it a sign of respect. If his previous false god only knew that he almost bit clean through his tongue everytime he heard the poison spouted from those glazed lips...
He wanted to scream and decry the monster but he was silent, a sin of omission because he knew better.
And yet…
And yet he tries to quantify and qualify the most important relationship of his life outside of that with his family. A man he gave up his world for just because there was something in his voice when he said “I can help these people.”
Instead of his usual silence, he tries to let the man know with those ugly words, the break in silence that always lets him down.
“I wish for you to know…”
Jack O’Neill leans forward and rests one cool palm on his face.
As always, it is the other man who knows exactly what to say when he does not.

I'd ask "all the king's horses and all the king's men" to help put you back together, but the nursery rhyme union wouldn't allow it. You see, I couldn't get them to help fix Jack either...
