I should have thought of this sooner.

Would anyone be willing to create a PDF version of my Big Bang fic for download? I think I saw someone offering to do just that somewhere but I can't remember who or where! I've had a few requests and being non-tech savvy I forget some people now exclusively read on their kindles etc.

If you upload the fic to Archive Of Our Own, the archive automatically generates several eBook formats for download, including PDF, ePub, and Mobi (the three most popular formats). And uploading is real easy; one of the options is to give AO3 the link to where the fic is (a link to each chapter, if it's a multi-chapter fic) and AO3 will import it. (It then will include links to your LJ tags when importing from LJ, which is only a minor annoyance. Also, you'll probably want to go in and add header information to make it easier for people to search and find. But still, really easy. And you can include graphics, too.)

I was definitely going to archive there but I didn't think I would be able to archive the art with the story so I didn't want to point people in that direction at first! :D Thanks for the heads up! I won't have a chance to do it for a few days though so if anyone's willing to do a quick and dirty PDF I'll grab that an an interim measure! :D

You can have artwork in your story. You just need to make sure the links point back to the right direction. I have artwork in my last year's big bang at the A03.

Just so you know if you switch to the free Open Office suite as an alternative to Microsoft office, the equivalent of Word has a button that turns every document into a pdf. I love it.

If you want to stick to Microsoft, there used to be a plugin to save files directly as pdf...not sure if it's still available as I switched to Open Office ages ago. You might want to check the microsoft website for that kind of thing.

Ooooh... I definitely will!

There is freeware print to PDF agents online if I get desperate. :D

What word processor are you using? (You've gotten some advice above, in case you want to try yourself.)

If you'd rather, I can do it for you (and we're in the same time zone, I believe.)

I was being pretty lazy because I would need to get rid of all the HTML coding out of my word doc before I converted it. I think I'll do that anyway and then I can embed the art and make it pretty for people to download. I should have done it before but just getting the story done was a marathon over the last few weeks and I just didn't think about it to be honest.

Thanks for the offer though!

Thanks hon!

I've got someone that already converted it to read themselves on their kindle so I'm going to snag that one as a workaround so that peeps can access it and then do a sparklier one with the art embedded when I get off my lazy butt. :D

All righty then. But feel free to ask in the future. I has the toolz (and some of the skillz).

I can make an epub/mobi/lrf version of your story. I volunteered to help out authors before the SPN big bang posting and the offer is still open. :) email me at amalthia at gmail.com if you still need help.

Someone had already converted it so there is now a PDF available. Thanks for the offer lovely!!

I don't know if you know this but the reason people do like mobi and epub vs PDF is because pdf looks horrible on 6 and 5 inch screens. I don't even bother with pdf because it looks that bad. If people are still requesting pdf its either to read on the computer monitor or they are new to the kindle and haven't seen what mobi looks like. Or they gave up on authors providing ebook versions... pdf is easy to make and I think that's why it is so popular but it is not a true ebook format its a print to paper format. Though if the person that made your pdf downsized the word paper size to 5 or 6 inches and then converted to pdf it may look ok...on 5 and 6 inch screens. It will not look good on ipad or smartphones. If you care about how your story looks on different screen sizes you would need epub or mobi because the text reflows to fit the screen size.

Aaaaah! Thanks for that - I don't have any readers so I didn't know that!

If you're still willing to do up an epub version that would be awesome. Do you need me to send you the word doc - would that be easier?

Yes, I am still willing to help. :) if you could send word version to my email I can create ebook versions for you. Though it may take a few days. School is kicking my ass this semester. My email is amalthia at gmail.com.

Send artwork if you'd like it embedded in the story.

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

No rush at all. :D

Would it be easier if I include the artwork in the word document or separately?

It'll probably take me a day or so because I'll have to remove all the HTML coding from the word doc... hee!
amalthia: (Default)

From: [personal profile] amalthia

You don't need to remove html coding. I can turn your doc into html without losing the italics and etc...

As for artwork I am less likely to mess up placement if the images are in word doc.

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Awesome!

Thanks so much for this - I'll get it all fixed up and shoot through to you over the next day or so.

You're a doll!

It looks like [livejournal.com profile] dragynville did an .epub as well as a PDF download. Do you want to check it out and let me know!

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Sorry! I meant to link to it (http://kellifer-fic.livejournal.com/336517.html?thread=6890373#t6890373). That would have helped!

It's a-okay. If I weren't on my phone checking my email I would have checked out your master post first before asking where the epub was located.

Hugs!
