So Podfics.

I never really... got into them? I don't know why, I just would kind of skim on past if someone on my flist pointed them out (except for my own, those I would announce gleefully) but still, I was always so meh about them and I have no idea why.

Mostly, I have a fairly long car trip to and from work EVERY DAY and I have no idea why I haven't made myself a damn LIBRARY of podfics to listen to before.

So a plea for the flist - point me in the direction of your favourites (if they're still available), point me in the direction of yours, point me in the direction of older ones of mine because they're on my old laptop with the horrible virus so I dare not risk importing them across. Make new ones for me - hearing all the accents is DELIGHTING me.

I would make hundreds for you all but I have no idea how and I'm sure my Aussie accent would kill you all.

Comments are screened if you want to sling one my way but don't want to share with the populace at large but I'll unscreen any where you don't mind doing that.

I have a few dozen under my belt from a number of different fandoms...so if you want to give mine a try, they're archived at the podfic archive, here:

Oooh, podfic! [livejournal.com profile] standing_fic did a massive podfic rec post here: http://standing-fic.livejournal.com/95718.html#cutid1

And I agree with pretty much ALL of the things she recced (including [livejournal.com profile] sadcypress's fab rendition of my Midsummers fic. YAY!

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Oooooh... excellent! I'm going to have to go through these. Getting my podfic folder stuffed to bursting. :D

Just get anything [livejournal.com profile] juice817 and [livejournal.com profile] pandarus (aka FayJay) ever recorded and you'll be all set :).
--> http://audiofic.jinjurly.com/search/node/juice817
--> http://audiofic.jinjurly.com/search/node/fayjay

There's loads of other awesome stuff of course, but these two are my favourite readers by far. Their recording quality is also very high.

My bf once caught me listening to one of Fayjay's podfics and he thought it was a professional audiobook.

I unscreened this because I didn't think you would mind - let me know if you want me to delete. :D

Thanks for those! I keep hearing that FJ and juice are the ones to look out for.

I would go and raid [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon and check out the amplirecathon tag. It was fabulous for recs this year. My recs were here, but I could put up so many more now. That was like a month or two after I discoverd the whole Podfic thing.

[livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins is a very cool reader, who does quite a lot of crack!fic. [livejournal.com profile] speccygeekgrrl and FayJay have nice clear voices too.

I recently listened to Easy There (Merlin BBC) read by [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaryjo and really enjoyed it.

If there's something specific you're after, I'll have a look through the ones I've listened to already and let you know if I can rec you something.

P.S. I do occasionally read podfic under another user name, and the aussie accent doesn't seem to turn people off. Happy to read a fic for you at some point if you'd like that.

Feel free to unscreen.

I would like that very much! :D

I've just been through your rec lists and have a pile of stuff to listen to. I'm going to check out your resources too... I might dabble in recording some of my own but it will probably be very rough to begin with... heh!

I'm having a lot of fun with them!

I just asked lots and lots of questions over at [livejournal.com profile] podfic_tips and I lashed out and bought a nice microphone, since I wanted to play with one for other reasons anyway. :D

I got this mic and would recommend it if you are ever interested in buying a nice one: amazon link

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Oooooh... with the Aussie dollar strong I'm all about the Amazon purchases. It's my birthday in a week so maybe I can get someone to buy me that for funsies!

I might have to come back and pick your brains when I start out and I'll definitely check out that comm.

Fun!

*pops in, way late* HI! *SMISH*

I'm a huge podfic fan, though my downloading of any podfic mostly depends on whether I like the fic in question. Still, can't go wrong with fandom classics, right? ^_^ (AND, I see you haven't gotten any Arhtur/Eames recs yet, SO. \o/):
podfics of gyzym's fics (um, duh! =D)
podfics of weatherfront's fics (also duh)
• DEFINITELY FayJay's podfic of the_moonmoth's Half-Way Gone
• ALSO DEFINITELY [livejournal.com profile] 2naonh3_cl2's podfic of [livejournal.com profile] smallacts's Conspirators in Living
• aphelant's podfic of [livejournal.com profile] imogendisease's fic I'm not ready to see you this happy
• nodense's podfic of dipenates' fic Let Your Ladder Down For Those Who Really Shine (there's a faint echo/speaking-in-a-barrel effect going, but the reading and the fic itself is way too good to pass it up just because of that).

There, that should start you off nice and easy. ^_~ Enjoy!

I unscreened this - hope you don't mind because it looks like a grand starter kit - lemme know if you mind and I'll delete. :D

From: [identity profile] too-rational.livejournal.com

I don't mind at all, I just forgot to add 'it's okay to unscreen' to the comment, and I didn't want to clutter your post further. =)

<3

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

You would never clutter my posts darlin'. :D

I'm going to have a play around and maybe record some of my stuff for funsies (and [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui volunteered her work too... what is she thinking?? heh!) because it's like a whole new corner of fandom that I'd just been ignoring for god knows why!

From: [identity profile] too-rational.livejournal.com

Oh, you're going to have so much fun! =D And yays! More podfics. *draws hearts*

(Have you listened to any yet? *IS V. CURIOUS*)

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

I've listed to a couple of my own and have downloaded a heap to listen to from the recs here.

One I've listened to that I LOVED was actually a Tom Hardy/JGL RPF (not usually something I would seek out) but the reader was English so it worked really well because it was in TH's POV so it just sounded like everything was coming through his filter and the swearing really works in that accent... hee!

I have a 'pod' tag with all the fic *not a ton* of mine that's been pod'ed. :)

And if you want to make a pod of *any* of my fics, i'd be honored!

*i don't listen to pod fics, i utterly loathe headphones and will not listen 'out loud', dear gods. :)*

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Ooooh... I'll definitely check that out.

Hmmm... :D I might just have to take you up on that if you don't mind the Aussie accent. Heh! I'm going to have a look into it and see if I can work it out. *laughs*

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

My dad has the laid-back, central Australian accent which is the one you mostly see on TV. I've been asked numerous times if I am English/American/something else European. Heh.

It's funny, but i can usually tell. There's a certain way to the vowels that catches my ear an i think 'no, that's Australian.....' I'm not as good at New Zealand, it's not nearly as familiar here, but i could listen to someone with 'an accent' talk all day.

Unless, heh, it's one of those sticky-slow, drawly Southern US accents. Those just want to make me slap some people. I guess if your grammar is bad, i get annoyed, heh.

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

I've noticed people outside of our two countries tend to confuse Australian and NZ accents although I can tell a New Zealander a mile away - but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between different US accents. It's really what you're exposed to most.

I guess though because we have so much US television the American accent isn't so unusual to us. To be honest, the Aussie accent when I hear an Australian on an American show sounds really jarring and fake, even if it's an actual Australian. Every time there was an Australian on Lost it just sounded bizarre because the American accent sounds more "normal" in that context.
tabaqui: (robertcarlyleblue)

From: [personal profile] tabaqui

We tend to sort of lump them all together - i think a lot of American's don't think of NZ as it's own country, you know? Weird.

Heh - we tend to think any accent we hear is 'right' - oh, that character is from Scotland - scottish accent! Even though people *from* Scotland are like 'wth is that?'

:)

Here's a link to my answer at spnstoryfinders. :)

Since then I've listened to "Topspin", which was also excellent and am now listening to the quite long "A Kept Boy". I only listen to fics longer than 1 hour because of my commute and since I'm slightly picky (no Angel sex and usually no wincest, but lots of J2), I'm running out of things I haven't already read. :P I do have a wishlist of fics I wish someone would record though. :D

And I bet your Aussie accent would be fun. I've gotten used to British Jensen and Jared now, so half the time I don't even notice. Although British Jensen does seem more neurotic. *smirk*
