Summary: Prompt - Christmas
"I like to watch him heft things," Rory says, rubbing her hands briskly together. She's freezing and it doesn't help that she's perched on a wooden and concrete bench but the sight in front of her is worth a little suffering.
"He is certainly manly with the... hefting," her mother agrees in a tone that means she's humoring Rory while trying to work out a way to talk her out of whatever crazy thing it is she's doing. Considering Lorelai Gilmore is the crowned Queen of crazy behavior, it's never a compelling argument and usually her mother just ends up joining in. "How long were you planning on the watching?" she asks through gritted teeth so that they don't chatter.
"You don't have to stay," Rory offers magnanimously, knowing full-well that her mother will never abandon her to such a dire fate as creepily watching her new boyfriend in Taylor's Christmas tree lot alone.
He doesn't know she's here, mostly because she's embarrassed that she's still at the stage of gooey gazing.
She likes to do so from afar, often lingering outside the windows of Doose's Market behind the higher piled produce. Miss Patty caught her at it once and had said, oh honey, I thought the stalking would taper off when he actually asked you out.
"What are we doing?"
Lorelai and Rory both jump and turn in unison to see Sookie standing behind them, thermos clutched in one hand and knitted hat pulled so low she has to tilt her head up to look at them.
"We're watching hefting of the manly variety," her mom explains and Rory rolls her eyes and smacks a gloved hand to her face because right at that moment Miss Patty ushers her class of eight year old tap dancers by them and she treats Rory to a raised eyebrow.
"Really?" Sookie asks, sounding far too excited at the prospect and she makes skoot motions with her unoccupied hand until Rory shifts sideways on the bench. "Lucky I happened to be ambling by with this thermos full of hot coffee then!"
Sookie gets very loud and shrill when she's lying.
"Did you call Sookie?" Rory demands, turning on Lorelai. In turn her mom leans around her and narrows her eyes at Sookie.
"Ambling? Really?"
"I panicked," Sookie says with a shrug that's mostly disguised by her huge coat. "You didn't tell me there would be an inquisition."
They sit for a few moments in silence before Rory finally breaks. "Okay, fine. Give it," she says, making grabby hands at the thermos. She shares the thermos lid cup with her mom, passing the precious black liquid back and forth as Christmas tree shoppers file in and out of the lot. Dean isn't the only one working the lot but he appears to get lumped with dragging the much larger of the trees that are purchased to the buyer's cars. Kurt is also working but he seems to be feigning an increasingly unlikely array of injuries to avoid carrying anything.
As the temperature drops further, they indulge in a game of guess the injury. When Kurt limps, clutches a hand to his chest and tilts his head so that it almost touches his shoulder Lorelai yells, "Black Plague!" in her excitement and the sound of it carries across the street, all of the shoppers, Kurt, Taylor and Dean all turning their way. Rory can see Dean squint for a moment, spot her and a large grin break over his face. He waves vigorously.
"Aw, he's absolutely thrilled," Sookie coos as Dean starts to jog across the road towards them and she jabs Rory in the side with her elbow. Considering the layers and jackets between them, it's a surprisingly sharp jab.
"What should we do?" her mom whispers harshly. "I say scatter on the count of three. He can't catch us all and he might be confused by the flurry of movement and forget you were here."
"You're not supposed to be an embarrassing parent," Rory whines. "You're supposed to be the cool one that all my friends and classmates envy and wish was theirs."
"Right, sorry. Forgot that for a moment," her mom says and jumps up, almost knocking Dean flat. He kind of hops sideways to avoid her and then grins at them all.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" he asks, eyes finally settling on Rory herself. She glances at her mom and Lorelai, in true Lorelai fashion, comes to the rescue.
"We're thinking of getting a tree," Lorelai says, gesturing grandly in the direction of the lot. "However, we always need to sit and... absorb the trees first. Pick our favorite from a distance before we make a move."
"Um, okay," Dean says, scratching at the back of his neck. "We're closing up in about ten minutes. Have you picked?"
Sookie says, "Rory sure saw something in the lot she liked," before dissolving into a fit of giggles and everyone stares at her.
"Is it too late to scatter?" Rory asks out of the side of her mouth.
