Summary: - timestamp for Do Winchesters Dream of Electric Impalas

"It has to be perfect."

"Why's that?"

Dean looks back and up at Pastor Jim, who is watching him with that always intrigued half-tilt to his mouth. Dean doesn't mind so much the way Pastor Jim watches him, mostly because it's different from the way John watches him.

Pastor Jim isn't waiting for him to do something wrong.

"Because it's for Sammy," Dean says, like that should be explanation enough. He knows in some detached sort of way that Sammy isn't the center of everyone's universe, just his, but he still finds the concept a little hard to grasp.

Like how John can leave he and Sammy with Pastor Jim and go Somewhere Else.

"I want him to love it," Dean continues, perusing the stacked shelves in front of him. It's only early November but he'd insisted on going Christmas shopping for Sammy's present early because he wanted to be prepared but also because it might be his only chance. Sammy was with Pastor Jim's niece in Pastor Jim's safe room and only after Dean had checked it himself did he actually agreed to leave Sammy in someone else's care. Pastor Jim indulges him in a way that Dean also doesn't really understand.

Pastor Jim almost treats him... like a kid.

Pastor Jim makes a contemplative noise and taps his chin with a finger. Dean turns to him dutifully because it's the noise Pastor Jim always makes when he's about to say something that he wants Dean's full attention for.

It happens a lot.

"He's going to love whatever you get for him," Pastor Jim says, crouching down to Dean's level, which isn't that far any more. Dean's growing fast because that's what he's been pre-programmed to do. He's going to hit exactly six foot one in four years, three months and seventeen days and that will be his optimum height.

"How do you know that?" Dean asks, frowning.

"Because it'll be from you," Pastor Jim says, standing back up straight but not before he ruffles Dean's hair. Dean pats over his head in confusion. He's seen John do the same thing to Sammy on numerous occasions but he always took it for a sign of affection. He doesn't know why Pastor Jim would do it to him.

"That doesn't guarantee enjoyment of his gift," Dean says and then winces. Whenever he says something so blunt, Sammy rolls his eyes and says, Don't sound like such a robot, geez.. "That doesn't mean he'll like it," Dean corrects himself.

"It does, actually," Pastor Jim says with a firm nod that doesn't allow any room for argument. "He'll love it because he loves you."

"He... does?" Dean asks slowly.

"You didn't know that?" Pastor Jim asks, chuckling. "The kid thinks you hang to moon."

"I don't know what that means," Dean says, shopping temporarily forgotten.

"He adores you, kid, trust me," Pastor Jim says, reaching out to ruffle his hair again but Dean ducks this time and scowls because that's what Sammy does when John tries it. Pastor Jim chuckles. "You love him too so that means you'll get him the perfect gift."

"He's my primary focus," Dean corrects because love is not something he's been programmed for. He doesn't... he's pretty sure he doesn't... he's not capable of-

"Call it what you will," Pastor Jim says with a dismissive wave of his hand. "I for one have never seen love so plain and obvious."

"You're confusing action with emotion," Dean argues.

"You're confusing what's in here," Pastor Jim says, rapping a gentle fist against Dean's temple. "With what's in here," Pastor Jim taps him on the chest.

Dean opens his mouth to explain exactly what is under the place Pastor Jim tapped, including being willing to draw him a schematic on the etch-a-sketch he'd spotted earlier but then turns back to the shelf of toys.

"I'm going to pick the right present," Dean says with dawning understanding. "Because he's my brother and I love him."

"Exactly," Pastor Jim says and rests a hand on Dean's shoulder.

HEARTS IN EYES. (I can't remember if they are tragic, anticipating heartbreak hearts in eyes or love will conquer all hearts in eyes. I guess I'll have to reread the verse, HOW IS LIFE SO AWESOME \o/)

(Also, why oh why did show have to kill off Pastor Jim before we ever got to know him? Canon needs MOAR PASTOR JIM.)

I know - or at least FLASHBACKS!~

Where are the Pastor Jim-related flashbacks I ask you!??

Oh, I'd totally forgotten about this 'verse! Which is tragic because I love it.

"He's seen John do the same thing to Sammy on numerous occasions but he always took it for a sign of affection. He doesn't know why Pastor Jim would do it to him."

Kills me. Even as a robot Dean is imminently lovable! Glad that Pastor Jim, at least, recognizes that. :)

I love this verse and this was a beautiful little fic.

Such a seemingly unimportant little moment in the grand scheme of life but heart warming and so very sweet.

Dare I ask, is there any more where this came from?

*looks hopeful*

I want to write a final story, yes. I'm hoping to tackle that very soon. :D

*sigh* I can't begin to tell you how much I love Imitant!Dean :D SO happy to see more of this 'verse. *nudges plate of cookies toward you*... you know, should inspiration strike again, you'll need plenty of energy ;)

Hahahaa... might write some timestamps to get me back in the swing and then tackle that third story I'd been waffling on about.

There's a third story to this masterpiece rattling around in your head? Forget the cookies, I'm going to go fetch you a cake!

In the meantime, I support the idea of timestamps so heartily that if there was a parade for it, I would march in it. With bells on :)
