Something hard knocking against her temple wakes her from the depths of slumber.

"Wzuh?" Rory manages before she's able to blink open her eyes fully and see that it's Dean, blindly shoving the extension phone at her. He's still got his eyes closed.

"S'mom," he says, mostly into his pillow.

"What does your mom want?"

"No, your mom," Dean repeats, managing to get his face turned out of his pillow long enough to make the sentence intelligible. "She's being very insistent even though I told her we're both still asleep."

"Give it," Rory demands, suddenly awake. In a rush she remembers what day it is and what this phone call will be. It's not quite the same as it used to be, both of them snuggled on Rory's small bed.

It's a compromise.

"Mom!" Rory says into the phone and Dean winces and moves away from her volume. They'd had drinks at Miss Patty's the night before and they'd been meaning to duck out early but Rory and Dean had seen the wrong side of dawn before they'd finally both face planted in bed.

"Hey kid," Lorelai says and Rory can hear the smile in her voice. She wishes she could see it for real and thinks that she might just have to convince Dean to sleep over at Lorelai's on the next birthday.

She almost laughs thinking about how crowded her small bed would be then.

Rory waits, not having to say anything.

"Many moons ago, I was lying in this exact same position," Lorelai begins and Rory closes her eyes and just listens.

"Just how old does everyone think I am?"

Rory eyes the festively decorated and giant birthday cake with about eleven million candle numbers on the top. She then cuts a glance up at the sprinkler valve just above it and thinks that if they light that sucker they're all going to get wet.

"It's your mom being extra specially crazy," Dean says with a small chuckle, reaching towards the number '2' with one finger. Miss Patty, quick as a cobra, smacks his hand before he can touch the monstrosity. "It's a number for every year of your birth... well two for every year past the age of ten I guess."

Now that he's explained, Rory can see that the numbers aren't in fact all unceremoniously plonked down on pink frosting. Instead, they form a tight spiral, beginning with the numbers one and two and ending at the center with the last numbers.

Three and a zero.

"I asked for one thing for my birthday," Rory says in a low whisper. "Remember what that was?"

"For me to protect you from stuff... pretty much like this," Dean says but then he's grinning, slinging one arm across her shoulders and saying, "Hey, I talked them out of the glittery tiara and satin cape with Birthday Girl spelled out in rhinestones at least."

"You did, did you?" Rory asks archly as Babette and Kirk move forward, clutching two items which look suspiciously like a glittery tiara and satin cape with Birthday Girl spelled out in rhinestones.

"Ah," Dean says.

This is so lovely! I love to think that Lorelai would continue this every year for one, and with Dean in the family, aw!
