There was this meme around a little while ago comparing fandoms to the relationships you've had and it was oddly apt. You have a relationship with these wonderful, strange, sometimes frustrating shows. You're invested and they can break your heart just as easily as they can give you joy...
I've been thinking about it and yes, I can break down the fandoms I've found myself in pretty much in this way.
Stargate SG-1 - The first love
He wined you and dined you and was basically the best you ever had, a comparison for all others to come after. Unfortunately, you know it's over but you can't help falling into bed just that last couple of times, trying to recapture that old magic and it's a little bit sad but still nice.
You miss him and he'll always be in your heart but he's your past.
Stargate, Atlantis - The fling
You don't know how it happened. One minute you were watching a movie in your parent's basement, the next you were making out. He was cute and funny but you never really thought about him that way before. You don't really know that much about him and everytime you try to get a grip on him he does something different that throws you.
He's fun but your parents would only allow him in your house because he was a friend and they'd be horrified to think you were dating him.
But... he's really fun.
Supernatural - The one that blindsides you
He was too cute. He was fun to look at and you figured he was all surface but you never thought he would like you back, right up until he turned up on your doorstep with his hands jammed in his pockets and his hair over his face.
And hey, he likes reading and puppies and will watch Titanic with you and think Kate Winslet looked really nice in that last dress too. You get all of this and really nice abs and it's almost too good to be true.
You're waiting for him to hurt you and hoping he won't.
Heroes - The one you'll never have
He's the one on a motorcycle with some other girl on the back. He's standing on street corners with his hands in his jean pockets and a smoke between his lips and you kind of stumble when you walk past him and can't think of anything to say.
You know he'd probably drive you crazy if you ever tried to have anything permanent but it's nice to kind of fantasize about.
Battlestar Galactica - The long-distance thing
You see him maybe once every few months or even years. He comes in like a whirlwind and leaves about the same way. He says smart things and has ideas and you really like that, even if you don't always understand what he's talking about.
You just wish he lived closer but think maybe he would lose some of the mystery if he did.

Well, that's not all of it but that's it in a nutshell...
Edited to add: Okay yes, I seemed to forget a very important relationship - Buffy and Angel but I was never actually in the *fandoms* for those. I kind of got into fandoms when they were done and *ahem* dusted.
But if I had to, I would say that they were that summer where you were dating two guys at once and all your friends were waiting for it to blow up in your face but it just kinda... worked.
Except for that one year where Angel was just being really strange. :)

I love how you described your fandoms. So pretty and poetic!

The X-Files
He's this guy you met your first year of college. He was quiet, sullen and beautiful. You wanted to protect him from the world. When you finally got to know him you couldn't decide if he was crazy smart, or just crazy. Over a decade later you just bumped into him at a reunion. You wanted him to still be that cool, mysterious guy, only now he's just a rambling, confusing mess. Yet you still remember the your early years fondly.

Seriously, the first 3 series were beautiful and scaaaary. Very innovative, imho. Then again, I was a child so I was too naive? Maybe?

Buffy
You always thought you were straight, narrow, middle-of-the-road. But then you find yourself thinking about a girl, musing on her at odd moments during class, pondering her, trying to work out what she'll do next. And your world expands and you have to reinterpret your sense of self to include the fact that you are a woman attracted to another woman.
Which means ...
Supernatural
Women. You like women! They simultaneously have fewer issues and deeper thoughts. They understand you in a way men never can. But then there's him. The epitome of macho - guns and knives and solving things through violence. Except that's not who he is at all. And when he lets you see his heart - the vulnerability and gentleness and pain - you fall deeper than you ever thought you could.

Farscape! Farscape has to be my first love. Angel (the early episodes) was my fling, Supernatural is my greatest love, Lost is the one I'll never have, and BSG is the one who broke my heart ('cause really did it HAVE to jump a year ahead?)

Is it wrong that I'm now randy ... for all of those relationships ... all at once .... in one hell of a rocking weekend blur??
Can't relate to the Stargate thing but swap it for Xfiles and I'm set.
Oh..and Firefly is the tragic one Could so easily have been the love of your life if he had just lived to see it :( But then...would it have lasted if he had?
