"Is this what you call something going well?" Inara asks with an incredulously raised eyebrow.

"I'm still breathing, ain't I?" Mal retorts, stumbling a little sideways but then righting himself with a huff when Inara holds out a perfectly manicured hand to offer assistance. "And I got our money back."

"My money back," Inara corrects.

"Yeah, sure, yours."

"Which you actually lost in the first place."

"I don't exactly remember that being the case," Mal tries to deflect, waving a hand which overbalances him again and he manages to slam his shoulder into the stair rail. He groans but bites his lip to cut it off when Inara just looks triumphant.

"Where's Kaylee by the way?" Inara asks, finally noticing that the bubbly mechanic who had left with Mal hadn't returned with him.

"Well," Mal says, rubbing a hand over the back of his head and wincing when he encounters a particularly nasty lump. "After I won your money back, they kind of proposed double or nothin'"

"You didn't," Inara gasps, standing.

"Well, I didn't have double the money but one of the players had taken a shine to our Kaylee and kinda alluded to her being included in the pot."

"Mal, are you seriously telling me that you lost Kaylee in a card game?" Inara practically screeches, her ire only petering out when Kaylee chooses that moment to come tromping up the gangway, skirts hiked around her knees and her heavy boots clanging dully on the metal. She was pretty as a picture when she left but she looked more like a young girl who had taken it upon herself to climb trees in her Sunday best now. Much like Mal, if he'd climbed said trees and then fallen out, hitting every branch on the way down.

Kaylee grins as she flounces past and Inara turns narrowed eyes on Mal. "That wasn't funny!"

Hahah. Oh, Mal. And how much love was Kaylee in that dress? Daw. :) I needs a Firefly icon. Hmmm... (Did I mention I am possibly working on a SG-1/Firefly fic? bwhaha)
