I watched the first half of Stargate Atlantis' five years, then retreated into only hearing what happened in new episodes via fandom and reading fanfic voraciously.
I found the fandom and fanfic much more satisfying, because it buffed out the flaws that I saw in character interactions, dialogue, and overall plot. I recall running across an episode after I hadn't watched in a while and remembering how some of the characters I love in fanfic I didn't love how the show used them.
I'd feel weird reading Teen Wolf fic without seeing at least the pilot, just to get the idea of the way the characters interact and the world works. Then fandom can fix it for me as needed. ;)
