Summary: Cameron Mitchell loves his job. He's just not sure if his job loves him.

“Is.”

“Isn’t.”

“Is.”

“Isn’t.”

Is.”

Isn’t!”

Cameron is about to retreat because he thinks he’s heard a variation on this argument dozens, no, hundreds of times when Daniel and Vala turn on him and Daniel puts out his hands and says, “Cameron, help me out here.”

“Um…is?” Cameron attempts and knows he’s done the wrong thing because Vala lets out a squawk of triumph and commences a fairly complicated victory dance while Jackson looks furious.

He runs.

“…so I’m only here for a day and I haven’t seen them for a while…”

Cameron is only half paying attention to what O’Neill is saying, mostly because he’s trying to finish a report that Landry wanted fours hours ago and he looks up and says, “Yeah of course,” not really knowing what he’s agreeing to but figuring he wouldn’t exactly say no to whatever a General is asking him.

“Okay good, because I didn’t want it to be weird.”

Cameron looks up at that, just wondering what he’s agreed to but O’Neill tips him a jaunty smile and disappears out into the corridor. Cameron follows, leaning his head into the hallway and sees O’Neill join Teal’c, Jackson and Sam down the end. Before they disappear, O’Neill puts Daniel in a headlock and Sam throws her head back and laughs.

“So you weren’t invited either huh?” Cameron turns and sees Vala leaning up against the wall opposite, toying with one of her pigtails. She’s looking disgruntled and Cameron frowns.

“To what?”

“To their little dinner,” she sighs dramatically, putting the word ‘dinner’ in air quotes like it’s code for something. He’s wondering just who she picked up the air-quote thing from when it clicks what she’s said.

“Oh… they’re going out?” he asks, trying for flippant but his tone is a little strangled.

It’s team movie night. Or at least, it was.

“Keep up Cameron,” Vala snaps. “O’Neill swans in and they drop us like hot pies.”

“Hot cakes,” Cameron corrects absently.

000

Daniel and Sam have this patina to their conversation that is sometimes hard to follow, but Cameron tries. He’s sitting on a stool at the end of Sam’s lab table, watching them bent over a small metallic box that SG-17 brought through from P49-787.

“Maybe if we-“

“Or take this up to-“

“Like that thing from-“

“Ooh, I think you’ve got something.”

“Finish a damn sentence,” he interrupts and then blinks when Sam and Daniel both look at him, identical curiosity on their faces. They look at each other and Sam says solemnly,

“Grouchy pill?”

“Grouchy pill,” Daniel agrees earnestly and then says, “Like that time that I-“

“Exactly like that!” Sam snorts and Cameron throws up his hands and leaves the lab.

000

“I think I’m getting the hang of this.”

Teal’c opens one eye and regards Cameron, his expression as unreadable as ever. “Indeed,” he says and Cameron has prided himself recently on being able to tell just from inflection what the different Indeeds mean. This one is, “You really aren’t.”

Cameron frowns, but he has to admit that Teal’c is right. All he gets from meditation is a sore ass and watery eyes because some of Teal’c’s candles are scented. He’d learned though that Teal’c and Daniel meditated together, a way for them to reaffirm their bond when Daniel had descended, and he wondered if it would do the same for him.

Instead he thinks all he’s doing is annoying the crap out of Teal'c.

“I probably should…”

“Indeed.”

000

Cameron has a hand clapped over his bleeding shoulder, water running down his face and an urge to hurt someone. SG-1 is huddled in a cave in a hailstorm and Cameron’s been shot of all things.

“The difference between the words ‘friend’ and ‘enemy’ is merely intonation and emphasis,” Daniel is explaining as Sam pulls a laptop out of her bag and holds it away from her as water gushes out of it and onto the floor.

“So what you’re saying is…?”

“That when we came through the ‘gate I might’ve accidentally announced that we were enemies from beyond the stars.”

000

He wakes up in his own house, but when he tries to move there is a restraining hand on his shoulder.

“Hey, take it easy. You want something?”

Cameron blinks up at Daniel, trying to reconcile just why Jackson is in his house dressed in sweats and a t-shirt and holding a book in one hand. There is a blanket thrown over the armchair in the corner of his bedroom.

“What are you doing here?” he asks, hating the way he sounds muddled and also how speaking is like talking through crushed glass. Daniel moves out of his line of sight but is back moments later, a glass of water with a bendy straw sticking out of it, held carefully under his nose.

“It’s my shift. Teal’c and Vala have gone for donuts and Sam’s sleeping on the couch.”

“What are you all doing here?” Cameron asks, taking a careful sip of water.

“You got taken on ‘575. You were beaten pretty badly. You don’t remember?” Daniel’s brows are drawn down in a concerned frown.

“I remember it was waffle day,” Cameron offers.

“You’ve been on pretty heavy painkillers and in and out of consciousness. We were only allowed to bring you home yesterday and only because there was a mine collapse on P9T-622. They needed the beds.”

Daniel has his glasses pushed up to the top of his head and Cameron wants to tease him, but he’s tired. The sound of his front door opening and closing is heard and then the low bellow of Teal’c’ announcing he has glazed, Vala giggling and the answering complaint of an obviously just woken Sam.

“You’re all here,” Cameron says, blinking and trying to fight the lead weights someone has put on his lids.

“Of course,” Daniel says and Cameron lets sleep drag him under.

*squeeful dance of joy*

There was so much to enjoy in this little ficlet - but my absolute favourite would have to be the Daniel and Sam speaking in we're-so-close-we-can-read-each-other's-minds-and-just-infer-the-end-of-sentences code :D

And the team rallying around cameron at the end was icing on the cake :D

These are all really good and so in character for all of them.

Ah. We so need Cam fic like that. Well done! :)

Hey, that was fantastic! Thanks so much.

Just wonderful!

I can count the number of S9 fics I like on one hand. This is number four or five, I think.

SG-1 is high maintenance. But soooo worth it!

Ah, yes, they really do love him. *squeezes them all* Of course, how could they resist? ;) Sweet story, all the little angsty moments leading so perfectly up to the reward, just lovely. :D

Fantastic!

“The difference between the words ‘friend’ and ‘enemy’ is merely intonation and emphasis

and

I might’ve accidentally announced that we were enemies from beyond the stars.”

You have no idea how much I love it when Daniel gets to use his linguistic skills (and then messes up in the process). And oh, the end, when Cameron is surprised that the team is there, and Daniel is all "of course," like it wasn't even an issue. This pulled at my heartstrings.

Oh, oh, oh! I love this. A lot. I was just thinking today that about a year ago, I really wasn't that fond of Cameron - at least, not in terms of SG-1. Fine character, but not for this team, dammit.

But this really captures why he works, in his own way.

ok, now?

After reading this, I miss Cameron and the sg-1 team with a vengeance!

Great Cam voice! I don't know why but in the few sg1 fics I read, he sounded just like Sheppard and that always put me off, but you? really got him! Brava! *claps* ♥

Psst, typo here! > Landry wanted fours hours ago"

Awwww, just read this and it's so cute *loves cam*

From: [identity profile] vagablonde.livejournal.com

This is awesome! I'm not a big Cam fan, but I really really like this guy in your fic.

Found this thanks to a rec in [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, and I loved it! One thing that always seemed very poignant to me was Mitchell's struggle to find his place and his role in the team -- you've captured that very, very well, and I adore how everyone is so completely *themselves*. Thank you for an excellent read!

This is utterly wonderful.

(I followed the [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec link and then found I already had this memoried, so apologies for memming you w/o feedbacking! Because this is utterly totally wonderful. :-) :-))

From: [identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com

Heheee... not to worry... :) I realised that for some reason I didn't *reply* to any of the lovely feedback I got from this story and I have no idea why... I'm usually so anal about that kind of thing... *hands*

From: [identity profile] evesharmony.livejournal.com

I've read this before too and apparently also forgot to leave fb - I love this story - it's got a great Cam voice (in fact, everyone is spot on) and it so simply and elegantly describes his uncertainty about being on SG1.

Thanks for writing!

From: [identity profile] ninja007.livejournal.com

Man, you had me all angsty and then pulled it out of the fire! I love how you wrote this. Very well done. It's an official favorite fic of mine now!

From: [identity profile] colej55.livejournal.com

What a lovely fic! Funny, spot-on characterizations, and the teamy goodness we all will soon miss... Thanks so much for sharing!

From: [identity profile] izhilzha.livejournal.com

Oh! I love this. Of course Cam still thinks he's on the outside...and of course he really isn't, not in any of the ways that count.

From: [identity profile] maychorian.livejournal.com

Oh, I loved this. Felt so bad for Cam, all left out and newbie, but then the ending was all fuzzy warmth. Just, of course we're here, it's what we do, didn't you know? Much love.
