Part Seven

Jack had thought there would be a noise, commotion of some kind, but when he’d paced downstairs for two hours and couldn’t wait any longer, he’d taken the stairs two at a time back up to the room and Sam had just been gone.

“Dammit!” Jack swore, kicking a chair over. They now wouldn’t know if Ba’al had gotten a two hour head start on them.

“C’mon,” Jack called, racing down the stairs to collect Teal’c. “I got someone that owes me a favour.”

An hour later, they were on a small airstrip on the very edge of the desert and Jack was looking down at a scruffy man, asleep underneath the belly of his plane. Jack kicked the man’s foot and there was a curse and then a thump and another curse as the man sat up too quickly and whacked his head on the underside of the plane.

“What the…Jack?” the man rolled to his feet, looking lean and unshaved but still young despite the harshness of the environment.

“Sheppard, I need to borrow a plane.”

Sheppard quirked an eyebrow at Jack while leaning casually on the plane behind him and crossing his arms. “I’m fresh out,” he said jovially.

“I can make it worth your while,” Jack said as Sheppard leaned sideways to get a look at the glowering man behind him.

“Oh yeah, how so?”

“Look, I’m about to beat a bad guy, save a girl and steal the bad guy’s treasure. You can have a share.”

“In the girl?” Sheppard asked, grinning.

“Do we have a deal?”

“How do you know you’re not yanking my chain with this treasure business? Last time I saw you, you were scheduled to be hung.”

“Hey, yeah. Thanks for reminding me,” Jack said and quick as lightning, his fist struck out and connected solidly with Sheppard’s jaw. Sheppard slid sideways, thumping to the ground.

Ow, Christ!” he yelped, rubbing his abused jaw.

Jack stood over him, clenched fists at his sides. “Thanks for leaving me to swing, buddy.”

“I didn’t have the money to bail you out and besides, you slept with the warden’s wife.”

“That was you,” Jack snarled and Sheppard grinned sheepishly, leaning his back on the plane to push himself to his feet again.

Right, that part kinda slipped my mind when the warden was threatening to hang the mangy cur that had done it.”

Jack leaned over Sheppard’s shoulder, tapping the side of the plane with his fingers. “How about you give me Bessie and we’ll call it square.”

Sheppard looked pained, but defeated. “Fine,” he sighed, throwing up his hands.

When Sheppard wandered away, grumbling, Teal’c eyed the biplane before him sceptically.

“This contraption will fly?”

“Teal’c my friend, with me at the controls, this baby will soar.”

“They got here a little while ago. Where have you been?” Daniel demanded, darting out of the shadowed side of the pyramid as soon as he spotted Jack and Teal’c. George ambled over as well, looking worried.

“Had to procure transport. Where did they go?” Jack asked and Daniel turned, pointing behind himself to a recessed passageway on the opposite side of the pyramid they had entered last time.

“That tunnel leads directly down into the treasure chambers,” Daniel said.

Jack looked at him. “Of course you just happen to know where they are.”

“I’m very well read. I know a lot of things,” Daniel answered sniffily.

Sam opened her eyes slowly and made to move her arms, but the clinking of chains told her she wasn’t going to get very far. She raised her head and blinked at her surroundings, shapes resolving themselves in the dimness. “Hello?” she called, the sound echoing around the chamber.

A face appeared above her and Sam yelped, before narrowing her eyes. “I know you,” she said as Maybourne moved about her body, tugging at the wrist and leg restraints. He smiled.

“What Jack has told you, all lies I assure you,” he said and Sam rolled her eyes.

“You’re working for the bad guy. He couldn’t be that far off the mark.”

“Well, yes, there is that. But the alternative was a rather messy round of dismembering and I’m rather attached to my limbs.” Maybourne snorted at his own pun.

“Is that what happened to the men you were supposed to be the guide for?” Sam asked, tugging her hand at one of the wrist restraints and rotating her hand. She gave up after only a few tugs, knowing the cuffs were too tight for her to do much.

“Ba’al didn’t take kindly to them trespassing,” Maybourne shrugged.

“So, what’s going to happen to me?” Sam asked.

“You are very lucky. You will become his Queen, to rule by his side. You have given him back the key to the Chamber of Dawn and he will be able to free his children from their prison. But first, he will bless you with the gift of Godhood. His Queen slumbered with him.”

“What? There was only one body in the sarcophagus,” Sam said, her brow furrowing.

“Not quite,” Maybourne intoned, lifting a small Canopic jar onto the altar and placing it by Sam’s right foot. As he did, Ba’al swept into the chamber, smiling and dressed in flowing golden robes.

“Ah, I see you have met my Queen,” he said, stroking a finger down the side of the Canopic jar. Sam shuddered, remembering the etching and the snake. “Hold her. Humans tend to struggle because they do not understand the blessing.”

Maybourne leaned across Sam, putting two meaty hands on each of her shoulders. She knew it was useless, but tried to struggle against his hold anyway.

“Get your hands off my girl!” a voice bellowed and Maybourne squeaked, scurrying backwards.

Ba’al turned, a sneer on his face. “You think you can stop what is happening? You dare to defy a God?” he bellowed. He raised his hand and for the first time the others saw he was wearing the bracelet. His eyes glowed and a wall of energy shot from his hand, hitting Jack and Teal’c and sending them flying through the air.

Jack smashed against a wall and Teal’c landed awkwardly on top of a low stone table on the side of the room. Jack rolled over, holding his bruised side. “That sucked,” he groaned.

Daniel darted out and behind Ba’al, coming around to Sam’s other side and tugging at the chains anchoring her to the stone altar. “Crap,” he sighed as Ba’al turned and noticed him. Ba’al strode forward, skirting the altar and Daniel braced himself, expecting the same treatment but instead Ba’al came close enough to grab him and held out the bracelet. A beam of orange light shot out and connected with Daniel’s head and the younger man dropped to his knees, raw agony plain on his features.

“Jack!” Sam called as Daniel let out a choked gasp.

Jack rolled to his feet and pulled his rifle from his back, bringing it round to bear and sighting along its length. He fired and hit Ba’al in the shoulder, spinning him away from Daniel, who slumped backwards. Teal’c ran forward, pulling a small sliver of metal from out of his robes and making short work of the manacled locks on the chains.

Sam kicked free of her leg bindings as Teal’c freed her hands.

Ba’al stood, making to raise his hand again but grimacing in pain and holding his shoulder.

“You will all pay for your insolence!” he shrieked as Jack brought the rifle up again and with a lazy smirk, pulled the trigger.

Ba’al flinched backwards, but roared and charged Jack.

“Daniel, now!” Jack called as the younger man roused and was helped up by Sam. Daniel looked at her, looking appalled.

“I might as well rip up my degrees,” he sighed as he pulled a remote detonator from his jacket pocket.

“What are you doing?” Sam demanded.

“I found a chamber marked with a rising sun and Ba’al’s symbol. He kept talking about his children being entombed and we figured that was the most likely place for them. Not much will survive dynamite.”

“Daniel!” Jack called hoarsely. He’d been hauled up against the wall, his won rifle now being used to strangle him as Ba’al pressed it under his chin, grinning maniacally. Teal’c had reached over and was trying to pull it free but wasn’t having much success.

“Oh, alright!” Daniel yelled, almost sounding annoyed as he twisted the knob on top of the detonator. There was a hollow boom and the floor shook beneath their feet.

Out of the corner of her eye, Sam saw the Canopic jar fall from the altar. It smashed on the ground and something long and definitely snake-like wiggled free. Without another thought, Sam darted across and stomped down on its head, liking the way it crunched under her boot.

“Nooo!” Ba’al screamed, falling away from Jack and dropping to his knees. “You have destroyed her!”

Jack whipped the rifle around and placed the muzzle on the back of Ba’al’s neck. “Come back from this,” he growled and pulled the trigger.

“Just in case,” Sam smiled, holding the bracelet over the sarcophagus and watching the locks snap into place. Teal’c nodded and squeezed her shoulder.

“The Jaffa are grateful to you. We shall maintain our vigilance.”

“Are you going to put him back in Anubis?” Daniel asked, taking his glasses off and wiping them with the tale of his shirt. He looked through them and saw that he had only managed to put more dirt on. He huffed in annoyance.

“We shall take him to a safe place and he will be better guarded. After this many years, we had grown complacent.”

“I don’t know about that. I think you guys did a bang up job of scaring the beejesus out of us,” Jack said, grinning.

Teal’c chuckled. “I take that as a compliment, Jack.”

“Where’s that slimy little guy that was helping Ba’al?” Sam asked, shuddering.

“Maybourne? He always knows when to cut and run. It’s what he’s good at.” Jack sighed.

“So,” Daniel said, rubbing his hands. “Ba’al’s chamber of Dawn was conveniently far enough away from the treasure chamber that it should still be intact. Anyone want to go take a look see?”

George chuckled. “I’ll come with you. I want to hear more about your theories. Now that it doesn’t threaten our very existence, I’m willing to look at getting you published.”

Daniel flushed with pleasure. “Excellent. You guys coming?” he turned to Jack and Sam as Teal’c nodded and headed back out of the pyramid to alert his people.

Jack looked at Sam and grinned. “We’ll be there in a sec,” he said, snaking an arm around her waist and she flushed and ducked her head.

“Ugh. If anyone needs me, I’ll be doing something of great historical importance. I can’t believe you’re willing to go home empty handed.” Daniel sighed, heading back further into the chamber, George trailing in his wake.

Jack grinned, tugging Sam closer to him.

“Oh, I wouldn’t say that.”
