So, the screen died on my troublesome Toshi which means I will probably be a little sporadic over the next few weeks because while my work laptop is excellent, I also hate lugging it home on the train everyday so will be without computer off and on.

The Toshi I have has been nothing but a pain in the arse and since my extended warranty is with the store rather than the brand, I'm thinking if it's a case of replacement, I will go with something completely different. I'm also thinking desktop because I have my work lappie which is very new and splinky and an office model so lovely and reliable if I need something portable and the good thing about being in such a big company is the asset is yours rather than belonging to the job, so my laptop moves with me, even if I change positions.

You can get really teeny cute desktops now and considering they are MUCH cheaper... I'm thinking that's the way to go...

Also, my Toshi was huge and with a wide screen so pretty much as portable as a desktop anyway considering it weighed a frelling metric ton.

I can still watch dvds in bed with my work lappie and that's pretty much the only requirement I had for a portable computer. Oh, and writing... heh.

Yeah...I totally just switched back to a desktop. They are much more reliable, parts are easier to replace and they are so much cheaper! I'm pretty happy.

Very sad to hear you will be sporadic. I just realized today there is less than a month until ucp_ficathons are due! Yipes! :)

You have a Toshiba? OMG, they suck, they all suck so hard! Get a desktop if that's the way to go (though if you were ever a fan of writing in front of the TV I beg you reconsider), but avoid that company like the plague; it is entirely possible to get a reasonably-priced laptop that is not powered by evil imps. I recommend LG or HP and a warrenty with the actual company. Or, get a really good desktop and place it strategically in your favourite room, so you can have a comforting view whenever you look up.

Anyway, enough with my handwaving. Sorry.

Eep! That sucks, but maybe a blessing disguise as you can get something much better now. :)

Oh noes! *knows how you feel, as her Compaq's (laptop) hard drive died on her after less than a year*

Go with dell. They offer warranties up the yin-yang *curses herself for spending so much time with her parents* fo all of their PCs. *bought an extremely decent notebook from them for a good price, and knows they have desktops at even better prices*

Psst! It was the evil monkey! He killed your screen!

Computing has redefined the "love-hate relationship" for many of us. Since I know you should be writing, I'm just going to cut to the chase here. I do everything somewhere other than a desk, so my laptop goes with me:
- to the kitchen (watch "Siege II" while chopping onions)
- to the living room (reboot fileservers during "Allies")
- to bed (still sentimental about that 1st weekend spent with McShep fic)

It's good to have choices... I happen to have a ThinkPad, which has been very reliable and I do cart it back and forth to work a few times a month. You may want to consider a Powerbook. I know it isn't a PC, but it's very versatile and my SO takes his everywhere and pounds it to death. Not to mention nice graphics support.

So, Toshi, R.I.P. and now I'll stop rambling.
