I like the story so far. It definitely has me hooked.
One nitpick though, this sentence doesn't make sense:
[...]when neither failed to recover after five days and instead got progressively worse.
I mean, "neither failed to recover" means both recovered, no? It ought to something like "when both failed to recover" or "when neither recovered".
