Quietly cleaning his P-90, he would never admit that he was actually hiding from Teal'c and Sam. They talked softly in the front of the ship, leaving him to muse. He would deal with his grief eventually, but for now it was too large and raw.
He couldn't get a handle on it.
He remembered the first time he thought he had lost Daniel after they brought him back from Abydos.
Not the traditional, physical loss...

He found Daniel in the locker room, shrugging into one of his plethora of ugly plaid shirts. He couldn't tell if the younger man knew he was there so cleared his throat. Daniel slowed to a halt with one arm still bare.
He didn't turn.
"Are we going to have a problem?" Jack's tone was conversational.
"I just need some time." Daniel's voice was pitched low and intimate, asking permission and stating a fact at the same time.
Daniel had watched Jack, Kawalsky and the others take out numerous Jaffa when fighting for their lives on Abydos.
Today was the first time Daniel had seen Jack slip up behind someone and slide a knife in, silent death.
"I understand." Jack started to turn but felt a hand touch his sleeve. He looked back and could see Daniel's face, a study in puzzlement.
"You really don't. I don't think I do yet, either. I knew what you were capable of. I just didn't expect to feel..." Daniel's hand released Jack's sleeve and drifted in the air in a helpless gesture.
"Disappointed? Scared?" Jack guessed.
Daniel looked at him, eyes serious.
"Reassured."

He coughed slightly as his hands moved over the weapon, sure and steady.
"It's what we do..." He breathed to himself as he stood to join the others.
