It really was hard to kill him - because I knew where that story was going when I started it but then I got attached... :)
I think if he had lived then certainly Sam would not have gone into hunting and would've ended up going the college route. Dean I'm not sure about - he would have certainly been conflicted but it might have ended up mirroring canon more closely, except Josh would have been on the roadtrip with Dean and Sam.
