Oh my god, I'm a dufuss! I was saying that there was an awful background hum when I was trying to record podfic now and that noise removal wouldn't get rid of it, the quality just ended up being weird and distorted and flat. It was so bad that I was thinking I might not be able to do any of the requests. I even tried downloading a different recording program but that awful background hum was still there.

I was about to completely give up and then, I don't know why I even checked, but the drop-down for the microphone thingie was on internal and I checked the options and my external lovely USB microphone that I had been blaming unfairly for my troubles was a DIFFERENT OPTION and my laptop was recording everything using its internal microphone which is of course, terrible. I chose the other mic, did a test record and no more background hum.

Ugh, BRAIN AND APPLICATION USE FAIL.

So, I've started podding the Xmas pods. I need to kind of switch between projects to not go crazy so it's good I have a few. I had thought the mic didn't pick up my flatmates in the kitchen but it does so I'm currently paused while they're pottering around making dinner. Luckily, they online game a good chunk of the time and that is very quiet and in their room so I just have to wait for them to retreat again.
