Lorelai Gilmore/John Winchester (F) - "I'm going to take that as a compliment."

Two Strangers, One Cup Of Coffee

“Sorry hon, he got the last of it.”

Lorelai looks around and sees a man sitting at a booth by himself in the small diner she’s pulled into. It’s six in the morning and if she doesn’t get some coffee into her body soon she’s… well; she’s not really sure what will happen because she’s never gone without coffee for so long.

It’ll be messy, whatever it is.

“Hi,” she greets, sliding into the booth beside the man who has just gotten the last cup. Bertha, the waitress had been apologetic but firm. Their coffee supplier was running late with his delivery and the corner store they usually get an emergency supply from is closed for a family emergency.

The man looks up slowly and Lorelai almost apologises and leaves him alone because he looks so tired, but then the smell of fresh roast hits her nostrils and all reason goes out the window. “I’ll give you twenty bucks if you’ll share that with me.”

“What?” The man just blinks at her.

“Okay, fifty,” Lorelai says, upping her offer, and now the man is looking at her like she’s crazy.

“You mean this?” he asks, lifting the cup he’s been holding aloft and waggling it. He’s just been nursing it, hasn’t taken a sip in a whole thirty seconds and it’s going to drive her nuts.

“Fine, eighty,” Lorelai pleads, her desperation spiralling. Precious warmth is leeching from the black liquid as they talk.

The man simply raises an eyebrow, slides the second upturned cup over that’s on the table, flips it and tips half his coffee into it, passing it over. When Lorelai goes for her wallet, he waves her off.

“You sir, are a saint,” Lorelai enthuses and has to blink herself when the man just throws back his head and laughs. Precious time is wasting though and she brings the cup to her nose, inhaling for a moment before proceeding to finish the whole thing in three swallows. It’s doable because it had been lukewarm at best, but she was beyond caring.

“I’m Lorelai,” she introduces, holding a hand across the table. The man automatically takes it, some ingrained politeness that she approves of but he also kind of frowns and says, “Come again?”

“Lorelai,” she repeats. “It’s a family name.”

“Weird family,” the man grunts and Lorelai shakes her head.

“You have no idea.” She looks at him pointedly and he stares back for a moment before he seems to realise what she’s waiting for.

“Oh, uh, sorry. John,” he finally says.

He’s dark-featured and rough around the edges, the way she likes them. There’s a pall of sadness to him though that makes Lorelai instinctively want to fix him. She’s a sucker for lost puppies.

“I’m on a rollercoaster tour,” she blurts. Usually Lorelai would loudly deride people who felt compelled to strike up conversation with random strangers that very obviously want to be left alone, but she can’t seem to help herself. The man’s mouth tugs up a little at the corners and it’s worth the embarrassment just to see that, the way his eyes crinkle just so when he smiles.

“That’s unique,” he says and he’s not being dismissive so Lorelai feels justified in continuing.

“It was supposed to be one last hurrah for me and my daughter but she got a pretty important job right before we were going to leave. I decided, what the hell, you know? I’m keeping a pretty comprehensive video diary for her.”

“I got a boy at Stanford,” John says and he looks surprised at himself for a moment, like he hadn’t meant to say anything. Lorelai grins.

“That’s pretty impressive,” she says, resisting the urge to tell him that Rory went to Yale. Some parents think it’s a weird kind of one-upmanship if she mentions it.

“I had no idea he wanted to go,” he says, staring down at his cup. He hasn’t drunk any since she sat down and as she watches him toy with the cup, he slides it over to her. He sounds strangely… disappointed. Lorelai had never met a parent before who had not taken the opportunity, if sensing a captive audience, to extol the virtues of their college-bound kids. John just looks glum. “He left about six months ago.”

“Is he enjoying it?” Lorelai asks and if anything, John’s frown deepens.

“Hey.” Lorelai looks sideways and sees a guy who’s in his early twenties standing at their table. He’s wearing jeans and a leather jacket and looking a little anxious. His hands clench and unclench into fists. There’s a certain sameness to his features with John’s.

“Sorry, have to go,” John says, sliding out of the booth as the boy backs up. He’s still looking from John to Lorelai and back again like he’s happened upon something alien. She watches them leave, seeing John smack the back of the kid’s head when he says what sounds like, “Were you picking up?” with something akin to horror in his voice.

Lorelai’s cell phone bleats, the other bleary-eyed diner patrons turning to stare at her as Rory’s pre-recorded voice says, Lorelai Gilmore is the queen of all she surveys. She really needs to change her ring tone.

“Hey kid,” Lorelai greets, smiling to herself.

Ronon Dex/Rodney McKay/Ronon Dex (F) - "Are you going to eat that?"

Both Alike In Indignity

“There is absolutely no way in which this is fair!”

Rodney’s voice has gone shrill with mortification. All John knows is there’d been a weird hall-of-mirrors type structure, a faint smell of ozone and then a second Ronon.

“I mean, why would we get two of him,” Rodney continues, pointing an accusatory finger at one Ronon, swapping it to the other and then back again. None of them know which the original Ronon is. Not even Ronon.

And there’s the crux of Rodney’s consternation. They had all gone into the hall and only Ronon had been duplicated.

“Surely it would’ve been more beneficial to create another me. I need an assistant and only I’m smart enough to help me.”

John digs thumbs into his eyes for a moment. He’s getting a headache just thinking about the ramifications of two Rodneys. He looks around and notices Teyla is nowhere in sight. He’d just wished he’d thought of disappearing first.

“Would you work for you?” John asks instead and both Ronon’s snort at the same time. It’s a little disconcerting.

“Are you going to eat that?” One of them asks. Rodney blinks, looking down at the powerbar he’s just unwrapped. He looks at the Ronon who has spoken and then back at his food. “Just, it’s the last one till we get back.”

“I’m fully aware of that,” Rodney sniffs and then his eyes widen when he realises what he’s done.

“You grab his legs,” the second Ronon says as they both advance on Rodney. John spots Teyla heading back towards the ‘gate and leaves the sound of Rodney’s yells of protest behind him.

Untitled - Malcolm Reynolds/Evan Lorne (P) - "Because that's what I do."

Untitled

“What are you doing?” Lorne asks.

Evan Lorne had been taken on board the Serenity four months previously, Mal needing an extra pair of hands when Jayne was laid up with a broken leg. Jayne was now back fully functioning but Mal hadn’t been able to dismiss the ex-soldier. Not only had he fought for the Independents but he was also strangely… compelling.

“I’m waiting for our contact to come over those hills. What are you doing?”

I’m waiting for our contact to come over those hills,” Lorne corrects. “You’re posing.”

“I’m what?”

“Posing,” Lorne repeats, looking up into the hills. Jayne and Zoe are taking flanking positions in case Bebe decides to bring a little more firepower than they’d agreed on. That’s the trouble with dealing with thieves for the most part. Everyone’s out to rob you.

“I am not,” Mal denies, subtly shifting his stance. Okay, so he liked to look impressive when people first approached. Maybe the hand on the hip and the thrown back head were a little much but appearances were everything in this game, especially when, for the most part, you were vastly outgunned by those you dealt with.

“I’m not complaining,” Lorne says, casting an eye at Mal and raising an eyebrow. “But it’s a little distracting.”

“I’m distracting?” Mal asks and bites his lip to stop the automatic grin that’s surfaced. River, standing on their other side, flips a hand at them both. It’s either a sign for someone’s coming or stop being such dorks. Mal can never really be sure. Lorne lowers his weapon a little though so it must be closer to the latter.

“Stop fishing for compliments,” Lorne says, raising a hand to shade his eyes. The blue-tinged light of Deas Three hurts the eyes after a while. Mal and River are wearing shaded goggles but Lorne refused them, worried that anything obscuring his peripheral vision was too dangerous just to save him a little discomfort.

“Stop checking me out then,” Mal says and Lorne just laughs.

Cordelia Chase/Daniel Jackson (P) - "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

Somewhere Between Action And Romance

“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Daniel raises his eyebrows at the woman to the left of him in the video store. She eyes his teetering armload of DVDs, Jaws resting on the top of the stack. Daniel is always terrible at deciding what to get for team movie night and dreads his turn. He ends up trying to cover all bases.

The girl has a single DVD in hand, the title of which he can’t see but the picture on the front is black and white so he’s thinking it’s not the latest Hollywood blockbuster. She’s also pretty in a way that makes him look at her twice. “Nothing exciting on for the weekend?” she asks.

“Oh, uh, no. Just watching movies with friends,” he says. His glasses are slipping down his nose and he has no free hand to push them back so he has to tilt his head at a probably odd-looking angle to meet her gaze and not lose them. She’s slowly rocking from foot to foot, tapping her DVD against her thigh and eyeing him critically. Daniel feels himself flush under such intense scrutiny.

“It’s a wise move to come by yourself,” she says. “You get more than one person in a video store and you’re stuck there for hours.”

“We take turns,” Daniel says. He’s losing his grip on the DVDs and the last thing he needs is to drop them all at this girl’s feet. As if sensing his predicament, she reaches across and pushes the three that were making an escape attempt from the middle of the pile that would’ve been his undoing back into place.

“Sounds neat,” she says. “So, how good of a kisser are you?”

Daniel drops the DVDs. “I’m sorry, what?” he blurts. Other people in the store have turned to stare at him but the girl seems oblivious, still watching him in her almost unnerving manner.

“Last time I met a completely hot guy in glasses he was just a disaster. Kinda uncoordinated and tongue just… not where it’s supposed to go.”

Daniel pauses, halfway down to the floor to retrieve his movies and looks up at her. He stands again and looks around the place warily. He’s half-expecting to spot Cameron or Sam and find out this is all some weird prank. When he realises the girl is actually waiting for an answer, Daniel swallows hard.

“I mean, would you mind?” the girl says and gestures between herself and Daniel in a way that has him mystified. When she steps forward, kicking aside some of his errant DVDs, Daniel has no where to go. His back is against a shelf full of action movies. He’s about to protest but the girl is leaning in, coming up on her tiptoes but not very much because she’s tall. She catches him with his mouth half-open so his bottom lip is between hers.

His hands come up and hover because he’s not quite sure what to do with them. He means to gently push her back but it’s surprisingly good and everything in his body kind of zings in the most distracting way. She moves her mouth one way and he moves it the other and they kind of click together like puzzle pieces. He gets the tip of a tongue touching his top lip right before she steps back and away.

“Wow, okay,” she says, bringing a hand up to touch her lips. “You’ve redeemed bespectacled men everywhere.”

She’s gone before he can even ask her name.

Yep. You're definitely my hero now. Better than Superman, Spiderman, and Batman combined. You even managed to throw in a little Dean. That's just awesome! :D *shall now proceed to be an adoring, star-struck fan*

I think you just brain-fried me. Cordelia/Daniel is not a pairing I would have thought of, but damn, that was perfect. I love Cordy talking about her kiss with Wesley. So great!

Adored Lorelei talking to John, too.

Holy moly, Cordy/Daniel. Never would have thought of that one. That was terrific.

This is glee and torture wrapped in the same package. It's so good, but so little!!
Still, <3.

I love them! The title for mine made me grin - alike in indignity - as did the synchronised snorting by the Ronons (yay, Rononses!) and the idea of Rodney working for himself (ha!) and John and Teyla just walking off and leaving Rodney to his doom the Ronons. *grins like mad*
Liked Lorelei, despite not having a clue about the fandom. Coffee!
Lorne and Mal was niiiiice.
Cordelia making Daniel drop the DVDs was hilarious - such a random thing to say. And the zing, and the "Wow, okay," she says, bringing a hand up to touch her lips. "You've redeemed bespectacled men everywhere." I love Cordy. And Daniel, for that matter.
