I guess I see John a little on edge because Dean is an unknown quantity, forced on them by the powers that be and John feels his control of the situation is tenuous and he's reacting to that. He eases up in the next chapter and makes the first steps towards bridging the gap between them while still being wary.

I appreciate the feedback and hope what I've done isn't too incongruous with how you view Sheppard and therefore mars the whole for you.
