Jack is lying flat on his back, there is a pounding in his head and one of his eyes won’t open properly. He lies for a second in the silence and tries to piece together what had just happened.

He knows waking up prone and not actually being in bed is never a good sign.

Jack drops his head to the left and there are boots in front of his face. He reaches up a hand and grasps the toes of one of the boots and shakes it. It’s definitely got a foot inside which is attached to a leg and Jack hears a groan from above and to the right somewhere. He manages to get up onto his elbows and can see it’s actually Sheppard that is lying practically on top of him.

He reaches further up the man’s leg and jostles his knee. He hears a groan again and then John’s head appears, his eyes squinting and he’s got a fairly glorious bruise on his left temple that is red now and will tinge purple before the day is out.

“Wha’ happened?” John croaks and Jack sits up further, touching his eye gingerly and finding that yep, there’s definitely a rather impressive amount of swelling present.

“I think we opened the door,” Jack grumbled. “Either that or the roof fell on us. Feels about the same.”

Fear washed over John’s face and he sat up quickly. “Teyla?”

Jack also sat up and groaned. “Weir’s gone too,” he noted. He clicked his comm.

When Rodney arrived at Elizabeth’s office, he harrumphed in irritation to find her absent. He turned when he heard yelling in the control room and hurried out to see what was going on.

It seemed that every marine they had was either up on the control room balcony or down in the ‘gate room. When one of them moved out of Rodney’s line of sight, he finally noted who was at the center. There was a tall, wildly dressed man standing just before the ‘gate. He had one large hand on the back of Teyla’s neck and was holding Elizabeth with the other.

Rodney noticed Park leaning over the balcony railing next to a marine and she was where the large man’s gaze was directed. “Dial the ‘gate. I’m not going to ask you again.”

Park looked stricken when Elizabeth said, “Don’t do it.”

“You have to let me leave. I may have already been here too long. I will kill your leader if I have to.” He gave the hand holding Elizabeth a shake and her whole body was jostled sideways a few steps.

Rodney looked down at the tracer device in his hand and something clicked. He pelted towards the ‘gate stairs.

“Hold on, hold on!” He yelled. “No killing!”

The man’s gaze swiveled to track Rodney’s progress towards him. When Rodney hit the bottom of the stairs, Ensfield caught him. “Doctor McKay, get back!” he snapped but Rodney just glared at him.

“I know why you think you have to leave. You had a Wraith tracking device embedded in your back. We got it out!”

The man blinked, confusion washing over his features before they hardened. “That’s a lie,” he snarled.

“Oh really.” Rodney, still struggling with Ensfield, held the device aloft.

The man took a step backwards, disbelief crowding with hope on his face. That split second distraction was all that was needed. Teyla moved fast, first shoving Elizabeth sideways and out of Ronon’s grasp, then spinning and delivering a nasty kick to Ronon’s jaw.

Ronon was more surprised than hurt and stumbled back another step. The marines all brought weapons to bear but Teyla moved sideways, blocking him with her body. “Don’t shoot!” she cried. She held her position, legs apart and arms wide. She risked a glance behind her and could see Ronon sinking to his knees, breathing harshly.

“He would not have harmed us. He thought he was protecting us by leaving.” Teyla’s gaze met Ensfield’s and he sighed and then cocked his head.

“Lower your weapons,” he ordered. Rodney broke out of his grasp and darted over to Elizabeth, helping her to her feet. John and Jack appeared at the top of the ‘gate room stairs and John huffed in relief, spotting Teyla at once. He took the stairs down two at a time and skidded to a halt by her side.

“Are you alright?”

“I am fine. He did not harm us. You, on the other hand-“ Teyla touched tentative fingers to John’s brow and he winced. John leaned around Teyla and looked at Ronon, his gaze hard.

“We’re going to have words about this, buddy,” he snapped, indicating his temple with his finger.

Rodney had been walking and talking at the same time, gesticulating wildly while he explained how very exciting finding the tracer device was, although the drawback was that it was a tracer device and he still hadn’t finished his analysis on it’s range, although he’d managed to turn the thing off.

When he paused for breath, he finally noticed that Jack had herded him into one of the smaller storage rooms on the way to his labs. Rodney spun about, indicating the room with a sweep of his arms.

“What are we doing in here?” he asked.

Jack raised an eyebrow, and then winced when it pulled the bruised skin around his eye taut.

“You, saving the day, is unbelievably sexy,” Jack growled, his voice a low rumble.

“I … ah… oh," Rodney managed when Jack crowded him against the storeroom shelving and pressed his full length against Rodney’s own body. Jack traced the tendon on the side of Rodney’s neck with his tongue and Rodney’s knees buckled. It was only Jack’s leg, insinuated between Rodney’s own, that managed to keep Rodney on his feet.

“As nice as this…ah… is, we should really…okay, you’re going to have to stop doing that.” Rodney tapped Jack on the forehead with the tracer device. Jack sighed heavily and thumped his forehead on Rodney’s shoulder. Rodney brought his hands up and carded them through Jack’s hair.

“Hard and fast?” Jack proposed, the lazy smirk on his face that he knew Rodney found almost impossible to resist.

“Um yeah, okay. That works for me.” Rodney grinned, the last word lost in a breathless moan as Jack unbuckled Rodney’s belt and threaded a hand into his pants.

“Why me?” Daniel asked, a little mystified.

“You’re not threatening and people instinctively trust you.” Elizabeth said, standing on the stairs with Daniel leading into the brig. “People just naturally respond to you and we need him to trust us, even just a little bit. You’re good at getting people’s stories out of them.”

“If you want him to trust us, is having him back in the cell the best thing for that?”

Elizabeth sighed. “Despite being searched by three different marines, he still had two knives on him when he made his escape attempt.” Elizabeth grimaced. “I’m not taking any chances here. He can’t leave, but I’m not sure he would understand why. You can explain our very delicate position to him.”

Daniel gave Elizabeth a slow, contemplative blink. “You don’t want to risk Teyla again, do you?” he prompted.

Elizabeth sighed again. “That’s not it at all. Ronon Dex managed to take out both Colonel O’Neill and Major Sheppard without too much trouble. Teyla is down in the infirmary with Major Sheppard because he has a concussion. I’d rather leave her there for now.”

Daniel nodded. “Guards outside?”

“I have four men posted midway, then another two at the top of the stairs.”

“Right. Okay.” Daniel clapped his hands, rubbing them together. He stepped around the doorway into the large expanse of the brig, the cell set in the middle. Standing in the middle, shoulders slumped, was the large man named Ronon Dex.

“Hi,” Daniel began, then grimaced at his rather pathetic beginning.

“Is it really out? It wasn’t just a trick?” There was a hopeful edge to Ronon’s voice that Daniel hadn’t been expecting and he automatically stepped forward, wanting to portray trust with proximity.

“The tracking device? Yes, it was taken out of you.” Daniel reassured.

Ronon’s arm curled up and over, touching the square of gauze on his back and he laughed roughly, the sound a harsh break to the quiet of their surroundings. “I tried so many… I even tried to cut it out myself.” Ronon looked up, something Daniel couldn’t read in his eyes. “How did you-?”

“We have a Doctor. She keeps telling everyone she’s just a field medic but she’s pretty impressive.”

“I paid a couple of different Doctors to remove it. They both just cut into me and then told me it was gone. The Wraith kept coming so I knew they were lying.”

“You said the Wraith kept coming. Why, if they had you would they release you with a tracking device imbedded? Did you escape?”

Ronon looked at Daniel carefully, his eyes tracking over him and weighing something unfathomable. Finally, he seemed to come to some kind of conclusion because a wry grin touched his features. “They released me. I was meant for training.”

“Training… oh god. You were sport to them?”

“Yes.”

An hour and a half later, Rodney was standing at the head of the conference table, looking at Jack, Elizabeth and Ensfield. John was still in the infirmary and had been ordered to stay in bed for at least a day, which he had strongly objected to.

Rodney had a monitor behind him that showed the output of their long-range scanners. “It’s a good news, bad news kinda deal,” he said, indicating the output behind him.

“No Hive ships?” Elizabeth guessed, looking at the clear screen.

Rodney put a finger to his lips and nodded. “No Hive ships in range of the tracking device from what I can ascertain,” he agreed. He then leaned forward and tapped a few keys on his laptop and the view changed, a number of dots brightening. “Here’s the bad bit. If there are any Wraith on any of these planets, they could have picked up the signal.” Rodney indicated a section of glowing dots with a wave of his hand.

“How many planets is that?” Jack asked, leaning forward on his elbows.

“Fifteen.”

Fifteen?” Elizabeth exclaimed.

“Yes, that’s ruling out the planets that are without a population for the Wraith to feed on. We need to check each one for recent Wraith activity.”

“No need,” Jack said, eyeing the others in the room and then scrubbing a hand through his hair. He hated always being the practical one. When all looked at him blankly he canted his head. “The last planet we were on? The planet we got this Ronon Dex from? It had Wraith. They could’ve tracked his signal and be on their way here now, or worse.”

“Worse?” Ensfield prompted, eyebrows raised.

“They could have gated back to their Hive ship and that could be on its way here now.”
