Okay, this was actually a comment on [personal profile] destina's LJ first but I figured hey, I haven't posted in a while.

I've seen quite a few people now comparing this to Buffy/Angel and I do agree. It's kind of interesting that this comparison is held up as a reason to both like and dislike the show.

I can agree that Joss has archetypes that he sticks to and that this is definitely along those lines but I think I'm not enjoying it BECAUSE of this. I kind of feel like Skye is a less successful Fred and the characters I really like so far - May, Fitz and Simmons, aren't the main characters. That Skye and Ward are being set up to be the main protags and so far I'm not that fussed about them. (Coulson is an entity unto himself and I will adore him no matter what he's in).

I DO like that it's basically "normal" people that are living in this extraordinary world and how they cope, it's a nice idea. It would get boring if a super swooped in every week and saved the day. I guess it's kind of suffering for me the way that Newsroom has, where I can see the characters that are being recreated, but it's not being done as well.

HOWEVER - Joss always does take a little while to hit his stride (Firefly was the rare exception where that was basically just NAILING it out of the gate - all the characters meshed and made sense immediately and the world had obviously been well thought out) - the first season of Buffy and the first season of Angel have some pretty dire episodes and I really only love them because I know how good it gets (especially Buffy - oh my god Joss, what was that swim team lizard episode? Surely there was a better way to get Xander into a pair of speedos).

I always worry about shows like these, that maybe my *wanting* to love it is affecting my ability to do so. Buffy came out of nowhere, so did Firefly so I wasn't expecting anything. They weren't built up. Expectation does harm result. (Hear that R.I.P.D.? Why was your preview so good and the movie itself so bad?? Ryan Reynolds, you keep sucking me in with your glorious face and then your movies are TERRIBLE - what is up with that??)

I want to watch it and I want to encourage others to even if they're having trouble because I want there to be a Season 2. Think about Buffy ending after only Season 1. We wouldn't have had Angelus or the episode Passion or SPIKE. We wouldn't have had Anya, Hush or Oz. We wouldn't have had the Mayor or Faith. We would definitely not have had the Angel series. That would have meant no Fred or Gunn or Wesley actually turning out to be pretty kickass. CORDELIA (y'know, before it got weird). I want that little Mutant Enemy guy cha-cha-ing across my television screen for years to come. I want to see him wearing the Santa Hat again.

This is basically where I am too. I definitely enjoyed the second episode, thought it was better than the first, but it hasn't gripped me in that Must Watch Now way. But it's still just the second episode. I can't rewatch most of Buffy season 1 without dying of embarrassment for the show, but then there's Prophesy Girl, which was one of the turning points for me.
