There's no obligation to, though. If you're content on LJ/DW, why spread yourself too thin or give yourself a headache? But you sound like you feel you're missing out on things and are interested. I'm sure there are plenty willing to offer tumblr/twitter guidance! (Feel free to ask my stuff if you want).

The one biggest difference seems to be lack of cut tags. Twitter has none (unless you use the tweet longer thing, so it is possible) and on tumblr I've noticed an increase in usage of the "read more" cut for spoilers and discussion of wank or really long posts. But all images and gifs and most posts are right out there on your dash. So LJ's long-standing consideration with hiding spoilers and using cut tags makes it easier to have flists of mixed interest. Twitter and tumblr is a bit more intense with things and people are relaxed about adding/unfollowing, which makes sense. (You can always get tumblr savior, which allows you to add certain tags to a blacklist so you see there is a post about it but don't have to see it. This only works if someone has tagged their posts properly, and not everyone does...but it's sort of a self-service version of the cut tag).

For example, Avengers fans tagged their posts "Avengers spoilers" for a while so as not to ruin it for others, and then others could tumblr savior that tag out.

Tumblr is jam packed with tasty Avengers pie at the moment...
