Tumblr exists in a vacuum; there's virtually no communication and no real sense of community. However, a lot fandom news "breaks" there, i.e. new videos/info/pics/gifs, etc. But I don't treat it like I do LJ at all. I don't freak out if I go three days without checking Tumblr like I do with LJ. I think there will always be a place for LJ in fandom, it's just not THE center of the fandom universe anymore. For me, using Twitter, AO3, Tumblr and LJ together is my fannish experience (I'm just too lazy to use Dreamwidth, even though I've tried).
