"I Never"

Title: I Never
By: [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
Rating: G
Category: Lorne/Novak
Disclaimer: Don't own, don't sue, no money!
Notes: Inspired by Kate and Sawyer's game of 'I Never' on Lost.
Summary: “My turn. I have never owned a Madonna album.”

Lorne’s mouth dropped open and then with a grimace he took the flask back and took a swallow. Novak snorted. “It’s always the quiet ones,” she mused.

Notes: Follows on from Moved To Distraction but ofcourse, can be read as a standalone.

“So, not a transporter then?”

Novak looked at Lorne for a few seconds, trying to work out whether he was being sarcastic, facetious or just dryly stating a fact. She had to admit that she didn’t really know him well enough yet to tell the difference and oh god, staring, she was staring, dragged her eyes from his face and centred them firmly on her feet.

“I’m sorry, should I be touching something?”

“What?” Novak squeaked, her voice a couple of octaves higher than probably human hearing could catch, but Lorne was just grinning at her patiently.

“You know, try activating something with my magic gene hands to get us out of here?” he clarified, waggling his hands to illustrate and then making a show of waving them around the small space they were trapped in.

“Oh right, no, probably not a good idea to just randomly touch things when we’re trapped in a small space. We don’t want to find out this is a trash compactor or something,” Novak said, leaning over to look at the control panel that was seated on the wall at hip-height.

“Like Star Wars,” Lorne agreed and then Novak was staring at him again because he was actually blushing. “Forget I said that,” he mumbled.

“I hope that doesn’t make me R2,” Novak quipped, brandishing her screwdriver that she’d pulled out of a pocket at Lorne and then they were both laughing and Lorne had a good, deep laugh that made Novak feel warm to her toes and was she ever in trouble.

Novak hunched back down to pry open the casing on the control panel as she heard Lorne’s radio click and he was obviously responding to a hail.

“Yes, trapped, Sir… yes, if it wouldn’t be too much trouble.” There was a pause and then Lorne snorted and said, “Tell him I heard that.”

“Colonel Sheppard?” Novak guessed, turning her head enough to see Lorne nod his head while he was listening.

“Doctor Novak, yes Sir,” Lorne said and then there was another silence. The silence stretched out long enough for Novak to get curious and turn back to Lorne, who was looking pained. He gave her a half-shrug and grimace and held up his hand to make a blah-blah motion but colour was creeping up his neck and flooding across his cheeks, betraying the boredom he was trying to project.

Novak turned back to her tinkering as she heard him say, “I’ll keep that in mind, Sir.”

“Are they trying to release us from the outside?” Novak asked.

“Hm? Oh, yes. Apparently there’s a small problem with the recycling tanks that’s taking precedence and they’ll get to us when they can. Colonel Sheppard said to,” Lorne sighed heavily. “Sit tight.”

“He thinks he’s funny, doesn’t he?” Novak asked with a chuckle and Lorne nodded.

“Not to disrespect a commanding officer, but yes, to the detriment of us all.”

~~~
The crystals on the control panel inside the small room were burnt out and after fiddling with them for an hour, Novak had to admit defeat. All the while the small room had been getting hotter and when Lorne had stripped off his jacket, Novak had renewed her interest in the control panel because otherwise there would be more staring.
“How about a game?” Lorne proposed.
“Sorry, I left my monopoly board in my other pants,” Novak threw over her shoulder and the control panel chose that very moment to spark, singeing her fingers. With a hiss she drew them back and stuck the tips into her mouth, sucking on them.
“How about you leave that and let the others spring us?” Lorne urged, looking concerned and abortively reaching for her hands, pulling his own back into his chest when Novak shied away from him.
“I’m okay,” she offered lamely, surprised that she hadn’t started hiccuping with abject humiliation, but the funny thing was she hadn’t hiccupped around Major Lorne since he’d carried her to the infirmary when she’d dropped an access panel on her foot.
“Well? You don’t always have to have something to make a game. How about ‘I Never’?”
“Don’t you need booze for that?” Novak asked and then blinked when Lorne grinned at her. He reached behind himself and pulled free a flask and Novak frowned.
“Don’t worry, I’m not secretly drinking on duty. One of the Athosian kids had it I’m not sure where they got it from.”
“Well, I don’t think you should drink on duty now,” Novak protested.
“I’ve been off duty for twenty minutes,” Lorne corrected, looking at his watch.
“I don’t think we should stumble out of here plastered,” Novak countered.
Lorne snorted. “Lindsey, c’mon. I could drink this whole thing by myself and still walk in a straight line.”
Novak, who was a little surprised that Lorne knew her first name wasn’t Doctor, huffed in defeat. “Okay, fine but nothing embarrassing”
Lorne rolled his eyes. “Beats the whole purpose of the game. I’ll do you a deal. What is said in the weird little non-transporter room stays in the weird little non-transporter room.” Lorne held out a hand and after a few seconds, Novak realised he was waiting to shake. With a wry grin, she grasped his hand and accepted.
They were both by this time sitting on the floor, legs stretched out so Lorne’s feet were pressed up against the opposite wall and Novak’s were just shy of it. “Who starts?” Novak asked.
“Well, I being the keeper of the flask, get to go first.” Lorne made a show of thinking before he tapped the flask on his chin and began. “I have never stolen chocolate off McKay.”
Novak took a moment to stare at Lorne. “What stays in the little weird room?” she repeated and Lorne grinned and nodded. When she leaned forward to relieve him of the flask and take a quick sip, he laughed and clapped his thigh.
“I knew it.” Lorne was still chuckling.
“I’m not the only one and he hoards the good stuff.” Novak narrowed her eyes. “My turn. I have never owned a Madonna album.”
Lorne’s mouth dropped open and then with a grimace he took the flask back and took a swallow. Novak snorted. “It’s always the quiet ones,” she mused.
“I have never been to Paris,” Lorne tried, obviously attempting to reroute them to a tamer area and Novak shrugged. “Wow, both been to a different galaxy but not France huh?”
“I’ve been to France, just not Paris. I’ve never been in a hot air balloon.”
“Me neither. I’ve never mistakenly eaten a piece of foam thinking it was one of those Asgard meal things.”
“How did you hear about that?” Novak grumbled, snatching the flask and taking a healthy belt. She wasn’t sure if the warmth spreading through her was the liquor or mortification. “Fine, I’ve never been pantsed in the gateroom.”
“I’m not sure how, but I will one day get even with Rosetti for that one,” Lorne growled, taking a drink. “I’ve never set my own hair on fire.”
“Oh, if it’s going to degenerate into cataloguing my unfortunate incidents, then you can forget it,” Novak snapped, but took the flask and a sip anyway. A self-conscious hand fluttered to her hair, touching the strands that were shorter than the others. “I’ve never been on a mission to the mainland that involved surfing with my CO.”
Lorne blinked. “Do you have some kind of freaky powers?” he asked, taking the flask back and another healthy belt.
“No, just Doctor McKay complaining about sunburn for weeks afterward,” Novak sighed and Lorne chuckled.
“Okay, I’ve never been on a real date.”
Novak blinked. “What?”
“Don’t worry, I’m not some weird guy that lives in my parent’s basement. I’ve had girlfriends, I just never got to take a girl, you know, out properly. I always just kinda fell into hanging out.”
Lorne held out the flask to Novak, but when she didn’t reach for it, he frowned. “Wait, you’re kidding right?”
Novak felt herself flush. “I was always a little… busy. You don’t get where I am and have much of a social life. Besides…” Novak trailed off.
“Besides what?” Lorne prodded, his frown deepening.
Besides,” Novak sighed, plucking dejectedly at her dark blue coverall and then touching her hair again. “I set myself on fire, hiccup when I’m the least bit nervous and am just generally… a disaster area.”
Lorne opened his mouth to say something when there was a clanging from outside. “You guys okay?” A voice called.
“Yeah, we’re fine,” Lorne responded, still looking at Novak with something like puzzlement.
“It’ll just be a few minutes, we’re cutting through the main feed out here.”
“Cool!” Lorne called back and then waggled the flask. “I get a bonus one,” he said.
“We don’t need to play anymore. We’ll be out in a tic,” Novak said, not really feeling in the mood for light-hearted banter anymore. Lorne pouted at her and she couldn’t help but grin.
Fine. What?”
“I’ve never had a crush on a scientist,” he said and Novak felt her belly give a sick roll. Was this his way of letting her down easy, she wondered? If it was, it seemed particularly cruel or callous. Novak, who had had a crush on McKay when she first met him and would never admit it on pain of death, reached for the flask, but Lorne pulled it out of her reach, uncapping it and swallowing the rest in three mouthfuls. Novak watched his throat work and then shake the last drops onto his tongue before it finally hit her what he was doing.
The doors cracked open and Radek poked his head in. “We thought this was a transporter,” he mused, looking around.
“Well, it’s not,” Lorne replied, pushing past Radek into the corridor outside and disappearing.
Novak watched him go, before finally looking down at the empty flask he had pressed into her hands.
She smiled.
Glee! Massive glee! I love how you get them as, not so much friends yet, but definitely vibing off each other in such a nice, platonic way...only to lead to abject cuteness.
I love the humor and the creativity used in coming up with 'I Never' things (particularly the hair fire and the eating of the foam -- hee!). I can never, ever think of things for that game, so I sit in happy awe.
Also, the Star Wars refs make me all warm and fuzzy. Geek love!
To which I say, Crush! BIG Crush! Score!
I really want to know what John said to make Lorne blush. *g*
Fine, I’ve never been dacked in the gateroom
What is "dacked" please?
[identity profile] kellifer-fic.livejournal.com 2006-08-09 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh crap, I was worried that was an australian-ism but I couldn't think of another way to put it.
Someone has run up behind him and pulled his pants down. 'Dacked'. Is there a better word for it?
Also? I really liked that Lorne and John are more than CO and 2IC, but also friends *g* Wonder what exactly did he tell Lorne to make him blush?
