Summary: “The reason I ask is because when you don’t think anyone is watching, you’re completely different.”

“Am I bothering you, ma’am?”

Novak stilled, her hands full of wires and her shoulders hunched. She’d been crouching in front of the guts of their latest acquisition, a small Ancient vehicle that Colonel Sheppard, much to Rodney’s consternation, had christened ‘The Hopper’, her legs were protesting miserably and she’d been hiccuping the entire time.

“I’m sorry, what?” she managed between the spasming of her diaphragm. She’d seen doctors of all kinds and had even tried a faith healer or two but nothing would banish the ridiculous, body shaking convulsions she had to endure each and every time she was the slightest bit nervous.

“Bothering you? I know you…when you’re, you know, nervous. I was just wondering if it was me?”

Novak felt her face heat and thanked whatever Gods had followed them to Pegasus that currently all Major Lorne could see of her was her back. “Excuse me?” she squeaked.

“You know, standing behind you with this?” There was a metallic plink that must have been Lorne flicking the barrel of his P90 with middle finger and thumb.

“Um, no. No, you’re fine.” Novak said, the most heartfelt hiccup issuing forth yet which managed to dislodge her and land her on her butt. “It’s just me,” she sighed, knowing that she had just landed in a pile of the greenish goo that had oozed out of the Hopper when she had first opened the access panel. “I’m just… mortifying.”

She heard Lorne chuckle behind her and thought perhaps he was just going to stand there and laugh at her predicament, when she felt strong hands under her armpits and she was hauled upright, an arm going around her waist to set her properly on her feet. “The reason I ask is because when you don’t think anyone is watching, you’re completely different.”

Novak had stepped away and was in the midst of twisting her body at a spine-breaking angle to inspect just how badly she’d messed up her uniform when what Lorne said finally filtered through. She paused, her back protesting and a hand full of the leg of her pants pulled halfway around to the front, to look at him. “When I don’t think anyone is watching?” she repeated, blinking at him.

“Yeah. When you’re just concentrating and you’ve fazed everyone out then you’re just really focused and cool.”

Novak looked down at herself, twisted halfway around and with green goo that unluckily was starting to smell having been exposed to the air and then back at Lorne. “Cool?” she asked incredulously.

Lorne stepped back to his original position and tapped the top of his P-90 thoughtfully. “Maybe if I turn around? Will that help?”

“Not at all,” Novak said and then froze when Lorne raised an eyebrow at her.

“Why not?”

Novak giggled, and then grimaced because she’d never been a girl that giggled and it just sounded wrong. “I’ll still know you’re there,” she said, hunching back down in front of the Hopper. “Plus, the back’s as nice as the front.”

“What was that?” Lorne asked, leaning forward.

Novak cast about desperately and then lifted the piece of access panel that she had set aside earlier. “I said I think I have this back to front,” she said in a rush, grinning gamely.

“Oh, right. Do you want me to hold something?”

Novak dropped the panel on her foot and bit her lip, pain rolling through the entire limb but the last thing she wanted was to hop around like a maniac.

Lorne’s brows were drawn down in worry. “Ah, that looked like it hurt… a lot,” he said, taking a step forward.

Novak held up a hand, halting his progress. “Maybe we’ll try that turning around thing,” Novak said. Lorne shrugged, still looking concerned, but obediently turned around, presenting her with a wide expanse of back.

Novak grabbed her foot and rolled till she was foetal on the ground, her mouth open in a silent yell. When the throbbing subsided, she stood, brushed her hair back and straightened her clothing as best as she could. “Okay, I’m good now,” she said brightly. “I just think I’ll pop to the infirmary because I’m pretty sure my toes are broken.”

Lorne made a sound of dismay and moved forward, sweeping Novak up into his arms, totally ignoring the way he was covered in the now pungent green mess in the process. “I’m thinking my cool rep is out the window, huh?” Novak sighed, rolling her eyes.

“Are you kidding me?” Lorne grinned. “That was the coolest thing I ever saw, right up until the rolling around on the ground bit.”

“How did you-“ Novak looked over Lorne’s shoulder at the second Hopper, it’s highly reflective surface winking at her in the sunlight. “How many ways do you know how to kill someone?”

“Enough,” Lorne replied non-commitally.

“Okay good, because if I don’t actually die of embarrassment and can’t find a handy hole in the ground to fall into, I may need your services.”

Lorne laughed, a good sound that vibrated through his chest and so through Novak where she was pressed against him, which made her stomach flip over. “You’re a weird woman,” he said, moving towards the corridor that led off the outside landing bay.

“Now that I’ve heard before,” Novak couldn’t help but smile herself. She’d felt ridiculous most of her life so she was used to seeing the funny side. It didn’t hurt that she was being held as carefully as a doll by a marine that she’d only seen from afar up until that very day but had always thought was adorable.

“There are worse things to be,” Lorne remarked, moving sideways to let another engineer past who was heading outside. The engineer gave them both a surprised look.

“A klutzy, hiccuping insane person isn’t enough for you?” Novak commented dryly, sneaking an arm over Lorne’s neck.

“Don’t forget good with engines,” he added. “Add that and you’re pretty much a perfect package.”

Novak thought she was being teased but Lorne’s arms tightened slightly, hugging her closer to his chest and his eyes skirted away, a shy smile edging out.

“We might be able to delay that whole shooting me thing,” Novak said, feeling her cheeks heat once more.

“I’d really prefer that,” Lorne agreed.

My first Lorne/Novak fic and I must say it's delightful. Nice characterization of both of them. I was laughing when she dropped the access panel on her foot, has Lorne turn around, then finds out he could see everything! Thanks for sharing.

Yay... the more that are inducted into the Lorne/Novak love the better... *smiles*

Not a pairing I've ever really considered (I'm only just at the beginning of S2) but I liked it nonetheless. I can totally pictur Novak in this situation. And I loved how she asked him to turn round, then started rolling around the floor in agony! *g*

Also?

"Okay good, because if I don't actually die of embarrassment and can't find a handy hole in the ground to fall into, I may need your services."

Best. Line. Ever. *g*

Not a pairing I've ever really considered

You know, that's the highest compliment someone can pay, when I can make something they've never really considered feasible and enjoyable.

Thanks for reading!

omg *giggles madly* So sweet and so funny. The bit when she drops the panel, makes him turn around and curls up silently yelling in pain is just so very Novak!

I'm so ashamed I didn't leave a comment the first time I read this. *puts into memories now as not to lose the fic again*

Awwww! As unlikely as that pairing is... I love it :D Novak's awdwardness and Lorne's smooth coolness... it's a pleasure to read it.

Really love your Novak, she was just such a hoot, and who wouldn't want to be held in the arms of Lorne.
