“What are you reading her?”
Dean looks up to see Sam in the doorway, arms crossed over his chest. He’s trying to look stern but the very sight of Dean reclined on their couch with Matilda slumped on his chest avidly watching the book Dean is paging through means that Sam has no chance.
“It’s some book with hippos,” Dean says, flipping the book and showing the cover.
“I didn’t hear anything about hippos,” Sam says and he’s still got the stern stance going but yeah, eyes are definitely softening up.
“Dude, like she knows the difference. I’m just trying to instill in her that there will always be Winchesters around. If she learns to count as well, bonus.”
“You’d have to stop at two then,” Sam says and Sam’s eyes do soften then, but with pain.
Dean grasps a chubby arm in his fingers and waves a tiny hand at Sam. Matilda gurgles happily, watching her own fist pump the air. “Nu’uh, three.”
“Technically she’s a Winters,” Sam corrects and Dean makes a dismissive huff.
“Winchester through and through,” Dean argues and then laughs when he releases Matilda’s small hand and her fist bounces back and bops him on the nose. “See?”
“You’re corrupting my kid,” Sam accuses, but there’s nothing but gentle affection in his tone as he enters the room and leans over to rub Matilda’s tummy. She laughs and makes a grab for Sam’s hand, latching onto his thumb and trying to jam it into her mouth.
