Last userpic meme drabble - "Inopportune"
Last meme ficlet (it's drabble-ish) for
kuwdora. You got in first and got your drabble last. Fair? No. Why? Because I stared at this picture for ages going... ummm...ahhhh....

After he was back a little while, memories would come to him at the oddest moments.
Daniel was sitting on an infirmary bed with a tongue depressor scratching the back of his throat when his high school locker combination came to him. He was showering after a mission when he remembered how his parents had died.
Daniel was standing in the line with lunch on his tray when he remembered that Jack had kissed him.
It had been a night like any other, with stargazing and beer on the agenda. Sam and Teal'c had left early and Daniel's cab had arrived when Jack had walked him to the door. He would usually stay over but he had some books he needed for the next day in his apartment.
It might have been the beer, but when Daniel had turned to wish Jack a goodnight in his open doorway, Jack had leaned forward and pressed his lips to Daniel's. At the time, Jack had then hiccupped drunkly and bade Daniel a fond farewell, but looking at it now, being able to view it from all directions, Daniel could see how Jack's hand had grasped the back of his neck to actually pull Daniel to him. He could see that Jack's other hand had been cupping Daniel's cheek, the thumb grazing his jaw.
He could see that Jack's eyes had been glazed when he'd pulled back, but not from alcohol.
They had gone to Kelowna the next afternoon.

Seriously, though. You gotta tell me that he went to Jack after remembering that one and didn't say anything, just kissed the living daylights out of the man, right? He went, right? Kell? Sweetie? He went, right?

Yes, that was exactly what happened. *smiles*

And here my heart just broke.

What a great triplet of memories-come-back. Perfect choice of which ones and the oddly mundane moments when they hit him.
Actually, what's really cool about this deceptively brief piece is the contexts-within-contexts. That's what I love about fics that play with time and memory. This is in the past tense, so relative to me sitting here (or the fictional current events of S9) it already happened. In it -- in moments rendered in past tense but very immediate and in-the-now in their effect -- Daniel remembers deeper-past events. But the last deeper-past event is a gut punch because it has the added context of what was going to happen (still in the future of the kiss moment, still in the future of the going-to-Kelowna moment) after they'd been in Kelowna for a while. It sends us through a wormhole of what-happened-in-and-after-Kelowna, a big whoooooosh up to the present ... but it leaves us guessing (hoping!!) about what happened between the moment on the lunch line when Daniel remembered the kiss, and ... now. Plus, there's also the question of whether the implied present of the fic is that moment on the lunch line, or whether it's written from the perspective of somewhere down the road, after his return-of-memory has maybe had consequences.
I love that stuff. I'm just sayin'.

Think happy ending with white picket fences and puppies and mochachinos...

He remembered, so I can extrapolate a happy ending onto it. Once I pick all the ribbons of my heart up off the floor. *sob*

Of course... it can be a 'choose your own adventure' with lots of love and snuggles afterwards.
