Permissions...

So, I have blanket permission/decline details regarding podfics, artworks, translations etc. Basically, the only thing I'm not comfortable with is translations because a. there is a history of people asking me to do them and then I never hear from them again (seriously, like EVERY TIME) and b. i have no idea how the story has been changed/what the content is).

I get that putting something on the internet means you lose control of it and I'm sure there are translations of my work floating around that I'll never know about, but someone on AO3 just did a translation of one of my stories and linked to the original story. What kind of makes me uncomfortable is that they originally posted this translation back in October and have only linked now. There are other stories on their dash without any other credit and there's no way to know what they are or who they were originally by.

I want to assume good faith here, and a part of me says not to worry, that it must take a lot of work to translate something and the story is *now* credited properly but it just... doesn't sit right if that makes sense. I just... I'd feel like an extra huge meanie if I asked them to take it down but I kind of want to.

I'm thinking of leaving a comment and urging the translator to make sure to read mission statements if they are available and respect them in the future, that I don't want to ask them to take this down because they've already done the work but I'm not going to link to it or approve it. It's kind of like that forever circular podfic discussion where someone will post saying, I can't contact Author A, surely that means I can just podfic their stuff anyway and my gut instinct is always no. That they didn't respond for a reason, maybe stopped posting for a reason. It's why I have a general statement, to make it easier for people to go on with their bad selves because it can be incredibly daunting to ask for that permission and disappointing when you feel like you're ignored.

There should be a way to update a permission statement on the dash on AO3 so that it's clear and easily accessible right where the story links are.

Obviously you can request whatever you like. However I do think its strange in fandom for us to not want people to play with our work, given that are whole existence is based on playing with someone else. And we totally disregard their wishes in regards to this.

I definitely don't want to come off sounding like I'm putting my foot down about my "original" work because I know I'm borrowing from someone else already. I'm totally fine with anything else, remixes, alternate POVs, podfics, re-writes, whatevs. I just suppose my discomfort comes from not being able to tell what the content is with translations.

Ugh, now you've said that I think I just need to get over myself and not worry about it. :)

I think it's awfully nice of you hon. You are really well within your fandom rights to scold the translator. Because seriously, if he or she is going to proceed to all that effort to translate it, would it have been that hard to at least drop you a note?

Heh... I just... can't approve or link to it because I can't be sure of the content. The translator might have inserted an underage tentacle porn scene and I would have no idea! :D
