They had joked about it once.

That was before.

Mal sits on the edge of the bed, a rare smoke clutched in his fingers. Their last job had been quite profitable.

Zoe sits on the other side of the bed, as far away as she can be without actually getting up. She reaches forward with a foot and snags her pants with a toe.

“I miss you, you know,” Mal says, hoping Zoe understands what he means.

He can feel her eyes on his back for a moment. She never looks him in the eye anymore, not even… during.

“I know Sir,” she says, her voice hollow. “Me too.”
