Summary: Jack prowls while the mountain sleeps.
Notes: Dusting off some stuff on the ol' hard drive that has never seen the light of day.

Jack liked the mountain when it was quiet.

Three in the morning was the optimum time to pace the corridors and not encounter another living soul. Towards the end of one shift but before the next one had begun, the place was almost holding its breath in anticipation of the noisy daytime.

Jack checked his watch as he walked. Three-oh-three.

Jack walked by dark offices and quiet labs, riding the elevator up and down, peering out into empty hallways before reeling his head back in and continuing on his amble. He could head home but there was a meeting at seven and he’d pretty much have time to take off his jacket before he had to head out again. He knew some of the techies were holding a poker game on fifteen tonight but it would be wrapping up and besides, Jack was their boss now and while he tried to be the same guy, there was still a hint of formality in his interactions that he couldn’t shake.

The VIP rooms were empty and Jack made quick work of short-sheeting two of the beds before he continued on his way. He was a sucker for the classics and was tickled with the idea that a negotiation with a visiting noble from some far-off world would be jeopardised by ill-fitting bed linen. More likely a member of one of the SG teams trying to catch a few winks would deal with momentary frustration.

Sam’s labs were empty as well, no underlings burning the midnight oil which was nice to see. Jack unearthed Sam’s not-so-secret stash of cookies from the not-so-hidden compartment on her desk and took three, putting the packet back with only a half biscuit left and knowing she would blame Daniel.

Yep, the classics.

Jack still couldn’t get used to the idea of Teal’c sleeping. He’d always been able to hunt him up and break him out of meditation without too much of a grumble. An early morning spar had become a ritual of sorts, lost like everything to time and circumstance. Jack mused that he really needed to get the guys over for some BBQ when he bypassed Teal’c’s suite of rooms and headed for the humanities area.

He stopped short in Daniel’s office doorway.

Daniel was asleep, slumped over on his desk with a hand flung out and curled around his coffee mug proclaiming Daniel was Number #1 Mom. Jack moved further into the office, prying the mug out of Daniel’s fingers and grimacing at the fine skin of gunk on the top, tipping it out in the small sink in the corner of the room.

“I wasn’aslep,” Daniel slurred, jolting upright and wiping at his mouth with a sleeve.

“I know, you were just concentrating really hard.” Jack nodded with a snort. Daniel had a crease running the length of his face on the right side, pressed in by the spine of one of his books.

“What time is it?” Daniel asked, hands thumping across his desk in search of his glasses. Jack snagged them from the corner of the table, giving them a quick rub with the tail of his jacket before handing them over.

“Really early, or really late, depending on whatever way you look at it.”

“Was I supposed to come home?”

Jack couldn’t help the grin that surfaced as he looked across at Daniel, who was pushing his books together into a haphazard pile that would tip over as soon as he took his hands away. Daniel finally seemed to realise that Jack was just staring at him and looked up, head tipped sideways in confusion. “What?”

Home for Daniel, ever since Jack had known him, had always been Abydos. Everywhere else was just the place I sleep or my apartment or more recently, your place. He didn’t know why it made such a difference, Daniel simply thinking now of the place they both mostly resided as the place he belonged but it did.

“C’mon,” Jack said, picking Daniel’s jacket up from the floor and dropping it over his shoulders. “I’ll drive you home.”

Maybe there would be enough time for cereal and even a shower, if they were very fast.
